I have a ballistic debate that i need help with....
Posted by Bien Fou on 5/18 at 9:29 am
Within the caliber of .270. What do the great hunters of the OB think is the best bullet to shot?
A) 130 grain
B) 150 grain

Whats your reason for shooting that cartridge? I personnaly shoot Federal Premium BTSP 150 gr. and have had no issues.

Is the muzzle velocity, and energy on impact that much of a difference, and also the bullet drop and i dont think that the recoil would be much different...

All imput is greatly appreciated..

Long range use the 150.
La. Deer hunting use the 130. Makes a horrific wound channel. Expends it's energy faster inside the target.

Either one will work just fine, but the 130 just does it better.

ive hit plenty of deer using the 150 and never had one go more than 30 yrds. Pretty massive impact and wound channel. Never shot the 130 so i have now experience on that grain.

I shoot the 150's out of my .270, they flop right there

Same here for the most part, but a buddy claims the 130 is the best round to shoot...

Could not agree more. The people who have problems with NBT's have generally been shooting them at lower velocities with heavier bullets. And I agree, heavier bullets moving slower, I don't want an NBT. But for a 130 moving fast, BOOM! I shoot that same round almost in the 30-06. 125gr doing 3200fps. It does things to a deer sized animal that you simply can't do with a 150 going slower.

But there are other variables. Particularly range. If you're shooting long range you want the heavier bullet so that it retains energy.

I can't understand why anyone would ever want to shoot a ballistic tip bullet at anything other than a varmit. I want a bullet that I know is gonna stay together and punch through the animal 100% of the time. I shoot 130grs out of my .270 because I am a firm believer that speed kills, but you need the right bullet.

I've never had one not punch through. The exit wound on that pic I posted was the size of a softball. The only problem I've ever had is turning a shoulder to jelly if it's not tucked in right behind it.

I usually try to shoot em in the head, but that pic is nasty.

Federal blue box 150gr round nose

/thread

They are absolutely disgusting on deer. My dad has been hunting with a .270 almost exclusively since 1985 and he's found nothing as nasty as them. They shoot very well out of his 7600 and are about the same as shooting a deer with a cruise missile. Seriously the most devastating whitetail round in any caliber I have ever seen.

Look man you think ballistic tips can't blow a deer up and that .243s are wound machines. I have to doubt your circle of hunting friends ability to hit what they are aiming at and don't understand rifle rounds.

Suck it.

yea, I remember one of those deer your brother shoot with those elephant killers.

bad,bad stuff happened there.

I just can't make myself shoot round nose bullets in a rifle, other a 30-30 or similar.

When did i say anything about ballistic tips?

Ive never said anything about any ammo or caliber that wasnt based on personal experience. I clean and track alot of deer every year and i feel like i have a pretty good data base of caliber and ammo performance on deer. Take it FWIW. Im not trying to sell anything.

Wasted energy. A bullet that mushrooms and increases its surface area expends more of its energy in the animal and has more shock/stopping power.

Why not a bullet that mushrooms, and exits?
You say wasted energy, I say two holes makes for better blood trails. People can say what they want about "hit them here and they flop every time", or "use this caliber, they don't take a step", or "these types of bullets lay em in their tracks every time". I have shot enough deer to know they don't always drop dead in their tracks from the best of shots, with 7mm mags.
