question for the experienced kayakers
Posted by heartbreakTiger on 5/17 at 11:32 pm
im looking to get started in kayaking. what is some advice you can give on a kayak for a beginner and any other tips?

I was thinking for now it would be more for fishing in ponds and lakes an such. My friend bought a inflatable one and I though about going this route do to having a jeep it just seemed easier for packing up and going.

For $500 you can get a decent 12" fishing kayak. Check Academy

Call your local paddle shops and ask about their Demo day at a local lake or pond. You can paddle 10-15 differnt boats in a few hours. You will learn more there in one afternoon then you ever will on the Internet. I've got 52 feet of kayaks in the back yard and still enjoy/learn from demo days.

It's not a high pressure sales thing. They just answer your questions and let you test the boats, paddles, PFDs etc.

I looked into some of the inflatables on Amazon. They look well made and stable, great reviews on some for only $150ish.

There are a couple of places I could hike to, but not drive, so it seemed like it would fit the bill.

Still undecided.

I have an inflatable one that I got for about 200. It sucks ass. Slow as hell, doesn't track straight, folds in the middle. Just overall sucks

I was afraid that would be the case.

Find yourself a good used sit-on-top, 12-14 ft. When it comes to kayaks, you get what you pay for.

Doesn't seem like inflatable and fishing (think hooks) would go together.

nor do they go well in the marsh. first oyster shell or barnacle scrape and you are done.
