| Awesome. Glad you got it. Reply Back to Top |
| I am so glad you were able to save it. Looks like it needs a lot of restoration, but maybe that's just how it looks in the pic and it isn't as rough in person. Keep us posted and take lots of before and after pics! Reply Back to Top |
| I'd consider donating that to the Andonie Musuem... Reply Back to Top |
| What kind of idiot leaves that in a building that is falling apart? Truly a shame. Reply Back to Top |
| This thread needs to be more epic, considering the subject and what you did to get it. Let's get some history on the painting and more description of getting in there and taking it down. Reply Back to Top |
| greg, how much longer will the demolition be going for? Reply Back to Top |
| Their was all kind of memorabilia in the Bar and other areas of the motel at one time . Decanters , pennants , pictures , I wonder who got those . I would like to have a couple of palates of that brick . Reply Back to Top |
| Awesome. I remember that picture from back in the day. Great memories. Reply Back to Top |
| what memories you have dug up for me. in the late 60's/early 70's we used to go to the belmont many friday nights to dance in the very room where the mural(s) were (i thought there were two). great job saving that painting. it most definately is a piece of LSU history for many LSU fans, esp us dancers.
Going to talk to Jack today about trying to find out some history. As for the subject matter, it is “The Stop” from the 59 LSU v Ole Miss game. A short description of me getting it down would go like this. After getting permission from Pat, the contractor, his brother and I started from the back of the hotel and traversed the grounds going through old windows, doors and hallways which were cluttered with things of a time long past. The dilapidated state of the once thriving getaway begs to the wonderer the things these walls had seen. Old faces staring back at me as we passed, the paintings weeping with no one to see their fine figures and stare in wonder. We conquered mountains of trash and fine furniture, crossed the treacherous stage whose floor was now a sinkhole for the unseen eye. Through dark alleys and twists and turns that would lead one to become lost in a maze, then came the light through the fallen roof. It was there, I could see it again with thy own two eyes. Now, sitting before me, the towering mural, like a shipwreck begging to be unearthed and see the light of day again. I drew my box cutter, and attached it an old pool cue by way of an old paintings hanging wire. The right side was the first to be freed, since the bottom was no longer attached. It came easy, as one would when released from bondage. Then to the roof we sought, for the painting was every so high. Back through the labyrinth of shadowy corridors and swampy floors. Through one last window and upon a chair, the roof. One laid across the roof and detached the top from its structure. Back down we came, and into the room. One last side was to be cut before this lost art could be retrieved from the bowels of this Titanic. The last cord was severed, and like a sting whose last life line was cut, it collapsed upon the rubble beneath it. It was carefully gathered and brought into the sun. Its pale skin thankful to be sitting again in the beaming eyes of an admirer. Rolled up then with the pool cute at its center, it was hoisted into the truck bed, and driven off to some distant place so it could be shown to the world once again. Hope that was up to your standards of being epic haha
greg, how much longer will the demolition be going for?
I was told they had 45 days. They began last weekend.
Their was all kind of memorabilia in the Bar and other areas of the motel at one time . Decanters , pennants , pictures , I wonder who got those . Some guy is buying a bunch of the bricks to build a house. Everything is for sale just about. Kinda pissed though, even though I got the piece, I got a deep scratch on my $400 Prada sunglasses when they were on my head. We were cutting the last piece and the roof above my head had so much rusty metal hanging down. As I drew my head back, one piece hit my glasses. | I'm glad someone like you got the mural Greg! I've read about your collection and know you will appreciate the piece and hopefully can get it restored to its former glory! Reply Back to Top |
quote: All that stuff was in Terry's Exxon (Seafood Corner) in Prairieville. He sold it all. There was a Bert Jones game used jersey a friend of mine bought there. The football team stayed at the Bellmont the night before home games in the 70's, that's why there was so much LSU memorabilia there. I'm sure you dig around, you may find a LSU gold mine in there. There are so many rooms just in the main building that probably haven't been entered in 20 years. Reply Back to Top |
| Maybe someone posted it… maybe not… if so = blow me Reply Back to Top |
