What Are The Problems Recruiting the QB Position?
Posted by TigerFanNKaty on 5/17 at 7:46 am
Is it because Louisiana has not produced any big names since RP?
Is it because the perception that Miles is a run first coach who only will throw to keep the defense honest?
Or is Miles really infatuated with the mobile, dual threat type that can't hit the side of a barn type and can't decide which style he really wants?

this might get ugly. RP not produced by Louisiana.

Times have changed most kids now are brought up in a spread offense with 4-5 WR's every down. It's why you see Texas QB's placed all around the country. If I was a prospect and saw the LSU QB's since RP it's easy to believe that I wouldn't get the proper development to take me to the next level. Also look at LSU QB's taken in the NFL draft recently. Jamoarcus overall #1 but was a bust. Flynn round 7 is the only QB recently with any production and he was able to sit behind one of the best in the league in Aaron Rodgers.

Our recruiting of QBs falls flat due to the incompetence that is LSU's offensive philosophy.

the state doesn't produce that many great QBs consistently. our high schools are very option oriented and many QBs in HS are simply the best athlete on the team. we do recruit a lot of them, but they end up at WR/CB/RB

RP was an elite talent. the mannings were elite talents. most of the other guys are developmental types like JJ or lester ricard

look at our list of QBs in the modern LSU era

booty: from LA but had a stint in the MLB
rohand: from florida
mauck: from indiana (i think)
randall: developmental mobile LA QB
JR: bama
flynn: texas
lee: texas
JJ: developmental mobile LA QB

our recruiting in TX has taken a slight step back, so i think our opportunities in signing QBs from TX has been hurt. zack lee probably would have been a good one, though

we also had roster issues. in 2006-2007 we had a big glut of QBs, which i'm sure affected recruits' decisions. then 2008-2011 we had essentially a horrible passing offense (b/c we lost the young RP, who likely scared off decent recruits prior). it was a night/day roster issue that just couldn't help

i dislike miles' offensive philosophies, but i don't think they are a big reason. UGA still recruits top-notch QBs and they're pretty boring on offense, too.

sometimes programs just go through periods of missing on QBs. look at FSU/Miami for the past decade or so. look at what's wrong with Texas currently

Losing Z Lee to Baseball and Gunner Kiel to Momma hurt us a lot......

Mett will shine this year and hopefully help out our situation

He played for East St. John. I don't know if he was born in LA, but he played high school in LA.

Good answer Slow, I don't think it is systemic. If we develope the group we have now then I think Miles offensive game plans will change.

i think we tend to overanalyze this and some conclude that our running philosophy hurts qb recruiting. i don't think so. bama is run first also and they don't receive that kind of critisism. besides, we were run first with JJ; how can anyone disagree with that. when JL was in we passed a lot more. i think we have had some bad luck and louisiana has not been producing great qb's as of late, esp. passing qb's. miles and co. have to go after out of staters and their hit or miss. we got lucky with mett and we need some more luck for his replacement.

One problem is that other SEC west teams are telling recruits that our QB coach may fall out and die at any moment. Don't worry, it's not the one that just got the commit from the QB we were after.

Combination of Les' perceived run-first preference and his botchery/favoritism of JJ.

What other SEC Schools have produced NFL Talent recently? UGA, with a Texas kid, UF, Ark, AU. Nobody consistently. Most were once in a while talents. I don't consider Wilson and McElroy NFL talents, either. LSU has had as much as anyone else since 2000. These last four years have been brutal , for sure, and these near misses are frustrating, but look at all the games we've won with poor QB play. Maybe we don't need a superstar, just a pretty good College QB?

That's the major factor IMO.

The secondary reason IMO is that Crowton wasn't a good recruiter of QBs nationwide. Krag's has done better getting Mett here as well as getting Keil interested. He hasn't had a lot of time to recruit though. Jimbo was a great recruiter and teacher of QBs.

i don't think the issue is isolated to lsu. you look around college football, there isn't a lot of quality qbs. Especially in the s.e.c.

I think the issue has more to do with h.s. coaches putting athletes at the qb position. therefore, a true qb isn't given the opportunity.

Tyler wilson wasn't a high profile qb, rg3 wasn't a high profile qb, russel wilson wasn't a high profile qb. luck was.

However, you look at d. krist at n.d., he was. e.j. manuel was, brantley was, t pryor was, the texas qb was. (the one in shep's class that transferred).

Aaron Murray is probably considered the s.e.c's best qb, however, he certainly not a peyton manning.

the qb position is the most difficult to evaluate, even at the pro level. it's why the can't miss guys, miss and the questionable guys succeed. sometimes you get a peyton manning who is a can't miss and doesn't miss, those are rare. luck, tebow, and cam were one of those as well. it's also why programs have a hard time being consistant, they have a really good qb then they struggle with the position. every university has this issue.

This, plus Les Miles history of poor QB development. It goes waaaay back. You could argue JR but he was pure, raw talent that didn't progress, wasn't recruited or developed by Miles. Flynn was ok but didn't really get any good ink until the NFL, unfairly I might add.. RP and all the other failures since we all know about.

RP was a good QB. He was the SEC championship player of the game. He was just a headcase.

He QB'd the National Championsip team and had to wait because he was behind a #1 overall draft pick.

I think that was more Crowton.
What was he supposed to do with Hatch? Lee had a terrible first year, and JJ showed some promise against ArKansas and Texas A&M and one other game, but not much else. Jimbo and Krags are good QB coaches. Krags will get us back on the right track.

I don't think we really have that much of an issue. Just look at the last seven years. First we have Jamarcus, then Flynn, then as the succession was suppose to go RP would have been next. That way JJ and JLee wouldn't have seen the field until maybe their junior year. Then we get a commitment from ZLee, and even though he passed and went to the MLB we get Mett, a player just as good if not better. We can't think we have a QB recruiting problem just because we lost a kid out of Indiana to Notre Dame, a kid out of S.C. to USCe, and then we lost out on another oos kid to the current N.C. We are going to be fine
