| They don't really have tons of great players though. Rooney's the only English player on a top four team that people would argue is that team's best player. Newcastle's best players are foreign. Chelsea has some good English players but they're getting up there age-wise. Even this year's lesser teams are somewhat the same way. Just going by the top ten, Fulham's best players are foreign. I don't know who the Liverpool fans think are their top five players, but my guess is it would be Gerrard and four foreigners (some group of Suarez, Reina, Leiva, Agger, and Skrtel.) | Their current roster has people like Gerrard, Lampard, Stewart Downing. I think Gerrard and Lampard are awesome in the EPL but I don't know how much they have in the tank for the Euros right after UCL/EPL action. Why Downing is on the roster. I have no clue. It's also funny that England has only placed in the World Cup's top three one time. (1 WC Win). While the US has finished in the top three at a WC 1 time. Reply • Back to Top |

| I've read Soccernomics. I agree with him to a certain extent. Some of his points can easily be refuted, particularly the one about English players needing to go to foreign leagues. Out of the most successful European national teams of the past 25 years or so (Germany, Spain, Italy, and France), only France has seen the majority of its players ply their trade for foreign clubs. Spanish players play in Spain (or Barcelona if you're into Catalan nationalism), German players play in Germany (aside from Ballack's stint at Chelsea) etc. The biggest problem with England is the lack of tactical knowledge by a vast majority of their international players the past 40-odd years. I think Kuper talks about how Italian players constantly receive tactical training alongside their on-field practice. Look how successful Italian players-cum-managers do in today's game. English managers for the most part suck (Allardyce, Redknapp as a tactician, Pearce, McClaren). As manager/organizer of my university team in England, I was scoffed at for suggesting that we try something other than a 4-4-2 to reverse a string of shitty performances (granted it was a largely shitty team). They had no concept of how using a 3 man backline could both improve our porous defense, while also creating more scoring opportunities. TL;DR: The English don't care about tactics.
