re: Guest who don't eat onions

Look, I didn't eat boiled crawfish until I was 20 years old. When we had crawfish boils at my uncle's house, I would bring a frozen pizza for myself. I eventually got over it but the embarrassment is probably what got me to try the crawfish.

When you make the invitation, explain what you plan to cook and put the decision on him. Tell him you will save oven space for his pizza.

That's pretty spot on.

I don't go onion crazy, but I can't think of a lot of dishes I cook that don't involve onions.

I don't mind having something really easy/quick in the oven for him, but it's probably not going to be the caliber of my main menu. He's cool with that, I think, and kind of figures I have him covered.

If I am in charge of apps for a family dinner or I'm just doing a cocktail thing, I have a file of special onion-free appetizer recipes and will almost always make one for him.

I'm not a complete ass, just partial...

People with food 'things' are very annoying, not talking about an allergy that has to carry an epipen, just a whiny "I don't like celery".

My thankfully ex-son-in-law was like that, the reason I hate Aggies and anyone from Arkansas, I just used to give him $10 and tell him the McDonalds was around the corner. He would beam and sit their with his happy meals while we ate real food.

Grow up. An adult can make a choice to try something and be polite enough to respect the effort someone puts into a meal.

An invitation to dinner is one of the nicest things you can do for someone.

Tell them to bring their own food over because a lot of your coking contains onions and it's hard for you to cook a different batch for just one person. If it were me though I would probably say "Either STFU and eat it or GTFO. You're missing out!"

I'm glad my SOs have all liked onions because I use it a lot in my cooking as well.

Again, this is what I've done many times to "children/adults(who think like children)". I give them a real fine dice and cook the hell out of them. Like I said, many, many dishes in french and S LA cooking use cooked down onions and most people that say they don't like diced/cooked down onions wouldn't even know they were in there unless they were told. Ignorance is bliss in my book, and those with allergies will explicitly state such.

ETA: This applies if a guest comes over to my house and makes a comment like this after I have cooked. Not before. Although, I've never had an adult over the age of 25 make a comment when showing up for a party start making comments about what ingredients they do/don't eat after food is prepared.

My mom said we were like this as kids. Her trick was to just serve us food in the dark. That way we couldn't see the onions. I am over my hatred for onions now, at least cooked ones. I still can't touch raw onions. They smell like body odor to me.

It's so hard for me to not tell them that the only reason any of it tastes worth a damn is because it has onions in it.

Keep a can of Spaghetti-O's in the pantry for when they come over.

Yeah, but did you kick him in the arse when the divorce was final for the times he did this shit?

First off, anyone that claims they can pick out the onion taste in most dishes is full of shite. If done right they are usually cooked down and become part of the flavor, not THE flavor.

Second, I know a few people like this and serve them dishes with onion in it all the time. They don't notice (see above).

And I will offer one better than the OP's guy - a member of my wife's family "hates" onions. I say "hates" because he will dominate onion rings like it's his job. Basically I am convinced he is just being a pain in the ass.

I have a friend who seriously "won't eat anything green"

She'll pick out PARSLEY FLAKES green onions, seasonings, etc.

This is what I'm wondering. This isn't a dish.. this is an ingredient that is the base for almost everything. All I can think of are things that aren;t "mixed".. like burgers, hotdogs, fried food, etc.

Pastas, rice dishes, casseroles, soups, etc. all have onions.

We have cousins that won't eat bell pepper.. I don't get it either.. I just take it to mean, they don't like spicy, heavily seasoned food and work around it... and use it as an opportunity to learn something.. ask them what kinda things they like and include them in the process.

I'm just not the soup nazi: "Sit down. Eat my food.. and you're GONNA like it!"

Take a Hot Pocket out the freezer and stick it in the microwave for them.

Do most people put onions on something like a grilled chicken salad?
