| Attended my first Big Green Eggfest today. Those people are like a cult. I was told 3 different times that buying one would change my life. I will admit that the free food was good but they wer acting like it was only possible from the magical big green egg. "It maintains the perfect temp for longer" I was told as a 99 cent totinos pizza was removed from the smoker. and "It's only like this with Big Green" as I was handed a shrimp and jalapeno stuffed bacon wrapped chicken breast skewer. I really don't get it. Also, Sam Adams Alpine Spring is not so great. This post was edited on 5/13 at 2:53 pm Reply Back to Top |

| FWIW, Guy I know couldn't grill burgers and dogs on a regular grill, since he bought a BGE, he is like the grillmaster... cooking briskets and things that are actually edible. Reply Back to Top |
| I know it sounds crazy, but food really does taste better off a BGE. Can't explain it, just true. Reply Back to Top |

| You should show them youtube clips of Grill Dome vs. BGE and watch heads explode. Reply Back to Top |
| BGE Fanboys have surpassed Mac fanboys IMO. Reply Back to Top |
| Maybe when you purchase a BGE you get inducted into a secret society (like the knights of templar) and take a oath of silence that only allows you to speak about it to other members. You could then enjoy your craft without worrying about the crybabies who are too poor to own a BGE. But then again, I'm thinking in scarcity and not in abundance. Reply Back to Top |

quote: I don't think I have ever seen an event held just for the promotion of any other specific grill or smoker. I can't remember any other product placement quite like the BGE, there were shirts, aprons, grilling utensils, fold out chairs, banners, etc. all in green all with BGE on them somwhere. I know I have never seen any charcoal that is grill or smoker specific. Reply Back to Top |
Posted by tewino on 5/13 at 9:26 pm to Bleeding purple They really are cult like. They really think things will come out better because of the Egg, rather than the technique they are using. I had a friend who ruined perfectly good steaks by trying to overdo the Egg thing.. Super high heat to sear (like 2 min/side), then lowered the Egg to like 250-300 and cooked steaks another 5 min or so. Guess what? Steaks almost well done. He should of just gone 2 or 3 min/ side high heat, rest, and had perfectly done med rare meat. He was just trying to overuse his Egg. It is also not the 'do everything' tool the grill master wishes it to be. It doesn't even come close to the Weber Smokey Mountain for smoking meats. The Egg is not a smoker, it is a grill (or oven if you close the lid). Yes you can rig it to be a smoker, just like I can use my screwdriver as a chisel, but that is not what it is designed for. I know the BGE zealots will hate on me, but I own and use a BGE myself- for grilling. I also have a WSM which I use- for smoking. Reply Back to Top |
| your "friend" doesn't know what he is doing. While you may be technically correct that the egg is not a smoker, your rocky mountain oyster thingy is not a grill either. Apples and oranges. I just used my egg to sear some steaks at about 850 F, rested them for 20 minutes and a grilled them with the lid closed at 400F for about 3 minutes per side and came out with medium rare awesomeness. I have also smoked a butt for 18 hours at 180-200 F overnight and didn't have to attend to it the entire time. It works for me. While it is more expensive than a weber or a rocky mountain thingy, for my money it's much better than those grills, and a lot more versatile when you spend the time to learn it. A gas grill is certainly easier and yields a result that many find acceptable. Think motorboat vs. sailboat. Anyone can fill a tank with petrol, start the motor, and advance the throttle. You need to have a little knowledge and experience to set the sails on a sloop, harness nature, and get where you intend on a sailboat. This post was edited on 5/13 at 10:38 pm Reply Back to Top |
