Equating Gay Rights to Struggle of Blacks in This Country
Posted by ragacamps on 5/10 at 11:02 am
I have heard the comparisons on this board and many others. Personally I really don't feel strong on either side of the gay marriage issue. Just seems unfair to make this comparison and really ignorant.

Given everything else they get offended by, I would think Blacks would be livid over this comparison. I guess they're on the same team at the end of the day, so selective outrage plays a part.

Lots of differences.

1. It's harder to detect gays by physical appearance so it's more difficult to oppress them.

2. 4 Trillion dollars hasn't been transferred to the Gay Community since LBJ. At least not that I know of.

3. Black, obese, female lesbians have what we call the 'quadrouple whammy.' Might as well just kill theyselves rat now.

Get over it.

Black struggles pale in comparison to gay struggles in this country.

Laughable and insulting to Blacks, big time.

Really ignorant? I can provide you the views of countelss black leaders on this topic but here is what the esteemed civil rights icon, Rep. John Lewis said in an interview with Terry Gross, host of NPR..

quote:

GROSS: I want to quote something that you wrote in an op-ed piece in October of 2003. And this was about gay rights and the right for gay people to marry. You wrote: I have fought too hard and too long against discrimination based on race and color not to stand up against discrimination based on sexual orientation. I've heard the reasons for opposing civil marriage for same-sex couples. Cut through the distractions, and they stink of the same fear, hatred and intolerance I have known in racism and in bigotry.

Now, I've heard some African-American leaders say that it's wrong to make - I'm not quoting you here, I'm saying this part myself. Your quote has ended. And I'm saying, I've heard some African-American leaders say that it's wrong to make any connection between the civil rights movement and the gay rights movement because discrimination against African-Americans and discrimination against gays are completely - completely different things, and being gay and being black are completely different things. What's your take on that?

Rep. LEWIS: Well, I do not buy that argument. I do not buy that argument. And today, I think more than ever before, we have to speak up and speak out to end discrimination based on sexual orientation. Dr. King used to say when people talked about blacks and whites falling in love and getting married - you know, at one time, in the state of Virginia, in my native state of Alabama, in Georgia and other parts of the South blacks and whites could not fall in love and get married. And Dr. King took a simple argument and said, races don't fall in love and get married. Individuals fall in love and get married.

It's not the business of the federal government. It's not the business of the state government to tell two individuals that they cannot fall in love and get married. And so I go back to what I said and wrote those lines a few years ago, that I fought too long and too hard against discrimination based on race and color not to stand up and fight and speak out against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

And you hear people defending marriage. Gay marriage is not a threat to heterosexual marriage. It is time for us to put that argument behind us. You cannot separate the issue of civil rights. It one of those absolute, immutable principle - we got to have not just civil rights for some but civil rights for all of us.

I wouldn't call John Lewis ignorant when it comes to civil rights.

Blacks in NC voted 2-1 to ban gay "marriage".

While I don't think that comparing the entire civil rights movement to same sex marriage is accurate, I think the comparison regarding interracial marriage is legitimate.

You cite the civil rights mafia as evidence? LOL

What Massa Pelosi tells 'em to do, they do.

Tons of differences, one really big similarity. That similarity is that the government is categorizing them because of a trait that they have that in no way outlines their character and denying them, if only on paper, equal treatment because of that trait.

History will treat "we want to be married too" just like "we want to drink from the same fountain." Deal with it, brother.

It is called shameless, but the left has no concept of shame at all. They have an overabundance of naricissism, moral superiority over those that disagree with them, and the innate knowledge that thier ideas are the only ones that are correct and that they are needed to move mankind forward to Utopia.

I'm sure the black people reading this board appreciate the slave reference.

Toddy, blacks are strongly against gay marriage. I guess they know nothing about civil rights. The numbers squash the comparison

I am black. What happened with James Clyburn back in '08 was a disgrace.

Not knowing which bathroom you are more comfortable using does not equate to being forced to using a separate one

Strange but true. Blacks are also very religious, so it's no surprise when considering that. Blacks are also very socially conservative. They may vote largely for Democrats, but they're socially more in line with the GOP.
