Posted by rpg37 make the rules for what constitutes marriage? If there is a true separation of church and state, then marriage is unconstitutional. The government should only have the ability to allow civil unions/contracts between individuals while only a church should be allowed to grant a wedding license. Why am I wrong? Reply Back to Top |
| You aren't. Reply Back to Top |
| Let each individual state determine what is marriage and what is not, then everything will be grand. Reply Back to Top |
| marriage isn't religious in nature, it is the method of the state to protecting a vital social interest: hetero sexual families the state has no rational interst in regulating queer unions Reply Back to Top |
| The reason is because of the role marriage plays in taxation, insurance benefits, medical issues, and inheritance. Because the government has a hand in all four of these things where marriage plays a large role, there must be a standard, codified definition of the word. Reply Back to Top |

| What is a civil union, exactly? I don't know if I like the idea of a government civil unionizing people. If this government weren't a criminal organization, I could get behind the idea of it enforcing contracts, though. Reply Back to Top |

| 'Marriage' is just a word. Would you like it better if the government used "civil union?" Reply Back to Top |
| Yes. For the prison that said queer marriages are irrelevant, what if children are involved? Reply Back to Top |

quote: They can"t. For example, under the government the definition of marriage can change by the political whims of whomever is the ruling party. Currently it's just a contract. Contracts can be broken easily. Under the Catholic Church, marriage is the covenant union of a man and woman under God and can only be boken by death. (I don't want to get into annulments and stuff). The latter has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. The former will change (evolve) with the political whims of the state. Reply Back to Top |

quote: I'm not wanting to creating a religious argument here, but I am afraid I will with this comment. I am a Catholic and believe this to be a sacrament of the religion that has been developed for hundreds of years. This is a practiced religious act between two people. Reply Back to Top |
| So you believe in zombies, spirits, cannibalism, and human mutilation, yet you have a problem with people getting married (despite the fact that it does not affect you)? Reply Back to Top |

| I am trying to figure out how two gay guys getting hitched, somehow cheats society out of more taxpaying offspring? Is the presumption that they would just marry women and have kids instead? ![]() Reply Back to Top |
quote: Thousands of years. Marriage was practiced before Christianity. Reply Back to Top |
