Dang. I have one you can have -- an old brinkman. But I live in Florida.

My current grill was a salvage from the trash pick up infront of my wife's uncles place. Its a 20 yr old charbroil with a single gas burner and a side burner for pots. I cleaned it up, sprayed it black, and replaced the burner all for around 30 dollars. I have had a "new" grill for 9 years now and it is still going strong.

Pretty much what I did in college.. Someone was throwing a gas grill away after the semester n I took it n used it for a charcoal BBQ pit.

Found a decent one on the brinkman site for ~$100.... Please share any other brands I may not know about

Decided to go with the Char-Broil American gourmet deluxe smoker/grill for $158 on amazon. No tax. Free shipping. They have them on sale at Wally world if you'd like to look at em in person

Nice. I'm gonna bring a keg to a guy to see if I can get it turned into a pit sometime soon. After I get the other keg turned into a crawfish pot.

We've got one of these. Use it year round. Works great for a family of four. Don't forget to go to Lowe's and get some hickory or mesquite wood chunks to put on the charcoal...

Looks neat. How thick is the metal and how can it be used as an offset smoke chamber, like it says? Does it connect to a larger one on the market?

I'm with Bien Fou. Love my Old Smokey. Have to replace it every 3 years but love the way it cooks. I got the extension legs on it so I don't have to stoop.

The metal is about 1/8" thick. The air intake is on the right hand side towards the bottom and the smoke discharge/exhaust is on the left hand side towards the top. I place my grill rack on the left hand side and put the charcoal on the right hand side. The natural draft pulls the heat over and under the meat or whatever it is you are cooking. You can also place the grill rack directly over the charcoal and cook that way. Yeah, it's a neat little smoker, but it is a stand alone unit. You can buy the bigger grills with a similar sized smoker on the side, but this one is quite adequate for us. I can cook several, several times with a 20 lb. bag of charcoal. I bought mine at Tractor Supply for 50 bucks. And it cooks a lot faster than I first thought it would. I've got a big Brinkman smoker for turkeys, hams, deer, etc.

With this setup, can you direct grill on the side box? I know the big chamber is for indirect BBQ/Smoking, but does the sidebox have a grill grate in it for searing a steak, etc.?

Yeh it has a grill grate but I think it's the smoking chamber. Build your fire in there and it goes through the main pit

Eta: I wanted something that could take care of all my needs. This pit is huge and has a smoker

Yes and yes to your questions. My table top smoker/grill is bigger than some of the side boxes available and smaller than others. If you direct grill on the sidebox or the tabletop, you have to learn how to adjust the heat with your charcoal quantity, draft control, etc. The grill rack height is not adjustable and you can easily overcook or burn your meat if you put in too much charcoal.

You can move the coals up and down to adjust the heat on this one

Char-Broil American gourmet deluxe smoker/grill
+1
Hand-me-down from my Uncle who was throwing it away... best free pit ever. Had it for 3 yrs, I know he had it for at least 4-5, had to replace the grill holders (inside the pit that holds the grate up) other than that, it's a damn beast.
Also have a gas Kenmore 4 burner LP Grill w/ Steamer.
