Starting my 10/22 build.
Posted by Ice Cream Sammich on 5/7 at 11:57 pm
I got bored the other day and started reading on rimfirecentral.com and looking at 10/22 builds. A few days later I made a half arse post on LA sportsman asking for a cheap used 10/22 as a donor gun. The next morning at 8 AM a guy called and wanted to sell me his. Well, now I have a POS gun that is almost useless. However, the receiver is in pretty good shape so itll do.

This gun will be used as a very accurate tree rat gun. It wont ever see a bench because thats just boring for me (being under 100 yards). I know that we have some .22 experts on here and I am hoping to get some advice from yall. If yall would change anything or recommend something else please say so. Thanks.

Hogue OM Stock- $55
Hornet BRTR Trigger- $109
Tactical Solutions 16” Barrel- $180 or Green Mountain 18" $170
KIDD Bolt- $100
KIDD Bolt Buffer- $6
KIDD Cocking Assembly- $36
KIDD Bolt Hold Open- $10

I have basically everything you listed on mine except I have the Volquartsen trigger. I love mine. I went with the olive stock to be different. You can spend some money in a hurry, that's for sure. I have a 3-9 Leupold on top.

I was looking at the VQ trigger but I dont want to drop that much money into a trigger group. I need a whole new assembly because mine is completely worn out. So I like the idea of getting the Hornet assembly and that way I can upgrade down the road if necessary.

I am actually thinking about the olive stock too. I havent even began to think about optics yet. I am trying to figure out why I bought this POS gun and if I can even use the receiver. The more that I look at it, the more I am concerned that its not even in spec anymore.

I broke everything down last night, including the trigger assembly, and cleaned the hell outta it. The bolt is actually very smooth but not butter. Also, everything is loose. I mean its bad. But I plan on sanding the receiver down and giving it some good coats of paint. Hopefully that will help it match up to a new trigger assembly and bolt.

Sorry for ranting and raving. Just trying to figure out what the hell im doing.

Add a TacSol Picatinny scope base to your list.

If you're going to hunt with it, Tac Sol because it's lighter.

You can modify yours with a Dremel tool.

Yeah I forgot to add that I'll be getting a scope base too. I am not sure if I need a 20 MOA or a 15 will be okay though.

Slash, both the TacSol and GM barrels are fluted. The 1.5" shouldn't make a huge difference in weight but which one would be more accurate?

I'll have to take a look at KIDDs bolt hold open. I didn't realize that it's just a modified stock one, thanks.

The GM is a solid steel barrel whereas the Tac-Sol barrel is aluminum with a liner. The GM has a tighter chamber.

So the GM will be hair more accurate but much heavier?

The TacSol has great reviews so it's not like they aren't accurate either. Also, I have heard that CCI minimags wont shoot out of some tighter barrels. I have lots of them stocked up so I might want to keep them in mind.

All that stuff should make a nice rifle. Never heard anything negative about any of it.

- radius the back of the bolt for easier cycling

- 'bed' the action by pinning your stock and receiver together by replacing the trigger group pins with 3/16 binder post screws, requires drilling the stock and receiver

What do you mean on this?

the square edge on the back of the bolt where it strikes the hammer to recock. Take your bench grinder and round-off/radius that edge a good bit

HeadSlash is right. It's an easy job that takes about 5-10 min. I think you can find instructions at Rimfirecentral.

I have decided on the TacSol barrel. I was unsure wether I should send off the stock bolt to be reworked or get a new one, I am getting the KIDD bolt. I plan bedding the action and possibly radius the action.

I was mostly concerned about the Hornet trigger. People on RFC say that its a good trigger but basically a reworked trigger in a stock housing. Exactly what I need.

Problem is that my stock bolt is rusted and pitted. I am sure that it can be polished and buffed but I would rather just get a damn good one for $100.
