| Rent advice-NYC posters Posted by The Lodge I am currently looking for an apt in NYC. Have a steady full time, plus a part time for extra cash. For those of you in NYC, or other major metro areas, how much (%) of your yearly paycheck are you spending on rent? I am looking in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Just want to get an idea. | 40% is a good number. When I first moved in I was going about 50% not including bonus. The most expensive areas are Greenwich Village, Soho, Upper East Side, and spots here and there. Brooklyn's not bad, especially if you're close to the subways (specifically the L, your communte won't be bad at all). Best advice is to go Manhattan at first because you're going to go balls out regardless in Manhattan. After you calm down a little bit go to Brooklyn. Reply • Back to Top |

| Alexandria is just as expensive, especially the nicer areas surrounding King St. If you ride the metro a lot you won't have a lot of choices in that area. Arlington rocks though. A bunch of my friends live in the Ballston/Courthouse area and I love going out there. Reply • Back to Top |

| How much do you make a year and I will tell you what you can afford. If you want best bang for buck, then choose somewhere in western Queens. Also expect to have a roommate in Manhattan unless you are a baller or want to live in a tiny tiny studio. Reply • Back to Top |
