Is It Time To Let Moviegoers Send Texts During A Film?: CinemaCon

At first I thought this was a joke but then as I started to read the article sadly I realized it wasn't.

quote:

This is a subject that gets movie execs going based on the lively debate this morning at a panel about industry issues at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Jeff Blake kicked off the discussion saying that 20 years ago “kids would come every week” to the movies. But no more. “I’m concerned that the moviegoing experience isn’t just for baby boomers.”

quote:

Regal Entertainment CEO Amy Miles says that her chain currently discourages cell phone use “but if we had a movie that appealed to a younger demographic, we could test some of these concepts.” For example, she says the chain talked about being more flexible about cell phone use at some screens that showed 21 Jump Street. “You’re trying to figure out if there’s something you can offer in the theater that I would not find appealing but my 18-year-old son” might.

Only if it allows us to also punch those people in the face without consequence.

Movie theater etiquette is at an time low. People text, talk, giggle, etc constantly.

It drives me fricking insane how little people care about others.

I always tried to tell myself that I wouldn't be one of those old people that talks about the "kids today" being selfish and undisciplined but jeez. I know I tend to use my phone a little too much but it's not hard to put your phone away for the duration of one movie.

quote:

MAX’s Greg Foster seemed to like the idea of relaxing the absolute ban on phone use in theaters. His 17-year-old son “constantly has his phone with him,” he says. “We want them to pay $12 to $14 to come into an auditorium and watch a movie. But they’ve become accustomed to controlling their own existence.” Banning cell phone use may make them “feel a little handcuffed.”

Seriously? It's pushover parents like this that turn their kids into selfish bastards.

I don't mind if people have their screens adjusted as dark as possible, but I hate when someone pulls out a really bright screen.

Giggle? People can't laugh? I'm one of those people that laugh at random parts of movies when no one else is. Can't help it.

My school is going on a field trip downtown tomorrow. We are going to participate in Law Day. Only half the kids signed up because they wouldn't be allowed to have their phones in the courthouse.

So low movie attendance is because they don't let kids use their cellphones...

It is definitely not that it costs 10 bucks a movie per person and you can rent from red box for a buck

This is the first I am hearing of any cell phone ban in movies.

Do they take it away from you when you enter?

No, but they threaten to kick you out if they see you with your phone out.

Every theater I go to plays a big announcement before the movie telling people to silence/cut off their cell phones. Of course a lot of people miss that because they're looking down to text.

I'm not going to lie or be all high and mighty, I've sent a few texts during movies before. It's not at all a every time occurance but I've done it. But I always sit at the very back row and even then I hunch over and block the light with my other hand. I only text using one hand. Crazy I know. People have told me I could text faster using both hands but my right thumb will hang with the best of em. Won a number of text races with this baby. But I'm getting of track. I mean sometimes you gotta tell somebody where you are sitting instead of getting up and missing the beginning of the movie. It doesn't bother me if other people send some texts during a movie though. Like I say, I sit in the back so you see people text in every movie. It does piss me off though when people just hold it out and text like it ain't nothing. At least try and cover it up best as you can. You can pretty much send a text with your phone still in your pocket.

They're wondering if that will help boost attendance, not exactly the same thing as saying that's why people are staying away.

The at home movie experience has just gotten a lot better. I don't think it's cost as much as convenience. Unless it's date night or a special effects movie I want to see on the big screen, it's just not worth the hassle.

I usually don't have a problem because Alamo Drafthouse Theaters in Austin are very strict about cell phone use, and it's easy to notify staff who is doing it. They also have an awesome bit before every movie on the screen.

They played this one for a while:

This can still be accomplished without a mother fricking cell phone.

If stupid mother frickers would just try leaving the fricking phone off just once they might discover that it doesn't matter if you know that Chet is eating chilli fries with Scott now or an hour and forty-five fricking minutes from now.
