Don't post in HT but I noticed this and figured you guys might want to see. I am sure it will get done but hate seeing this given the positive vibes coming out of all of this.

Wow.

the annual $3.65 million tax break the team now gets.

The state income tax from the players alone from a $60,000,000 payroll comes out to around $3.5m, and that's excluding the property taxes and sales taxes those players pay on things they buy here. I fricking hate politicians.

Yep, same bull shite went on when the Saints weren't winners. Let's act like a sports team in NOLA only helps New Orleans.

Email I sent Rep Harrison:

Representative Harrison,

Today’s Times Picayune states, “Rep. Joe Harrison, R-Napoleonville, said that Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey recently told the New Jersey Nets that the state cannot afford a subsidy for the team.  If Chris Christie can do that, then Mr. Benson can refinance or get another loan" to buy the Hornets, Harrison said."

I must point out that this statement shows a complete lack of understanding of the economic situation, and NBA business as a whole.

The New Jersey Nets are MOVING to Brooklyn, New York (different state) NEXT YEAR, in part, because of the cold shoulder turned on them from New Jersey. New Jersey is LOSING their business. The Times Picayune further states, "Greg Albrecht, chief economist for the Legislative Fiscal Office, said the bill will cost the state $54.75 million from now through 2024." The cost to the state, $54.75 million over 12 years, pales in comparison to the revenue generated by the team over the same time period, not to mention the millions in philanthropy the team returns to the community each year.  The Hornets have a $300 million economic impact, generate $10 million in taxes, and 2,000 jobs (link). Also, I should mention other revenue generated by league associated events, such as the NBA All Star Game, which in recent years has had single weekend impacts of $50-90 million for the host city.

Sometimes you have to invest money to make money. This is one of those cases; you can't argue with math. As someone with an economics background, you should know this.  Although the state spends substantial money up front, the state makes money hand-over-fist in the end and sustains jobs in a down economy.

Although we disagree here, as a fellow south LA registered Republican, I thank you for your service and for your support of conservative causes. I would just like to remind you that blindly following the "less spending" conservative mantra sometimes doesn't make sense if up-front investment is better for everyone in the long run.

Sincerely,
Man in the Stadium

It will pass. It only missed by 4 votes. Also, the current Quality Job Program for the Hornets runs for a few more years. Even if it fails this year there are still other chances in the future to get it done. It would be hard for some politicians to call themselves a conservative and vote to give the Hornets money the day after they find out the budget is about half a billion short next year.
