| It's time for LSU students and bar owners to surrender Tigerland Tigerland, even in my era of the 1980s was an aesthetically ugly bar area. And all these years later it's as blighty as ever. Slumlorded, not only now by apartment owners, but through the decades the bar owners largely just milked paydays too, rarely ever giving back or pouring much profit into bettering their bars. Now, it has become unsafe, much like when 1970s and 1980s LSU students had to surrender Highland Rd bars between the Downtown Overpass to the gates of LSU, by the early 1990s. It simply became unsafe, and/or undesirable for bar owners to develop or maintain, what were in some cases, nice bars/clubs, they succumbed to the decay and crime that surrounded them..the parking areas and crime alienated patrons. UGA/Athens, and some other SEC schools have some totally classy strips for their main bar concentrations. And with LSU no longer having the former bar concentration and dance clubs between WBRZ and the North Gates, the demolition of Murphy's, Paradise Records, numerous daquiri joints, McDs,etc..the need for the failing Tigerland to shine, was needed even more so. It has failed miserably in improving itself and/or reinventing via new investment. If Gaslite, and other Tigerland apartments mentioned on here, have truly went Section-8, and/or now largely inhabited by non-LSU student tenants, then the mission of Tigerland is now lost and done..and not coming back. In my day, the only true slum in there, despite many disgusting cheapo student apt complexes, was that three-story to the left of Dominos, out behind SI/Reggies. Crime was almost non-existent sans occasional busted car window and stereo stolen. Either scrap it, or the better idea, is to reclaim it, and redevelop it back to full health. But, I've yet to see a true gentrification project in BR. I see some noble efforts, which imho buy time, and/or 'fight the good fight' in slightly reversing some quick slides. But, have yet to see an 100% turnaround job. Time for some greedy slumlords and developers to get together for the common good of what amounts to LSU's doorstep. Because, right now it looks like LSU's being hemmed in with decay(and the crime that comes with it) at yet another bookend, an area that was formerly an ally..albeit ugly as hell! | If the brpd don't fight to reclaim that area then the students need to find a new scene. The only way to create that scene is to start frequenting and spending money in an area they feel is safe. So yes I agree its time to let tigerland go Reply • Back to Top |

| You're waiting on a city whom's own DOTD doesn't even have the manpower nor funds to cut and maintain it's medians and city sidewalks from growing 4 to 6 ft weeds..good luck! What it will take is pressure on the slumlords that cash that easy check at the first of every month from Uncle Sam, by their local peers and city authorities. And if owned by outta state owners, then some local push to buy said properties, and target the area for new development by someone with deep enough pockets and an sincere interest in LSU/BR. Greedy developers building cheap apartments for LSU students, is how Gardere/Burbank happened in the first place. | You're going to face charges almost Everytime you fire on someone outside of your own home. You may get of on self defense but you will face charges. It shouldn't come down to the everyday civilian to be forced to loom over his shoulder with a hand on the trigger everytime he steps out of his house. | A lot of students do still live around tigerland. Brightside/sharlo is full of students. I assume tiger plaza is as well. Even some of the other run down looking places have students living in them. Then East boyd, jennifer jean, and burbank all has students. That is all relatively close to each other, and in walking distance to the bars. The Bars also have dress codes, covers, and ask for college backups to keep unwanted people out of them. The problem is that, either through newer nicer apartments being built, and/or aging complexes vacancy and slumlording practices of no reinvestment to stay attractive, etc.. | jennin, I stated I havent been around Tigerland in 20+ yrs. But, have lived in BR twice as long as you've been on this Earth. I well know BR, LSU, and it's history, better than you. Thus, if you had an idea of what Tigerland was like when sh!tting your diapers back in 1987, yes, you'd well know by contrast it's went to sh!t comparatively, regardless of same ugly aesthetic. LSU isn't Tigerland, but the majority of BR's biggest developers are LSU grads, with an eye for profitt and improving BR & LSU, when possible. Reply • Back to Top |

| Yes, I realize how must crime happens, why, when, whom, etc..and how to hopefully avoid it. Regardless, the crime pin has been landing on LSU's southern door steps far more of recent, than previously, and not just it's North Gates..which used to have near exclusivity sans bar fights.
