| Draft Talk: Safeties Posted by blueslover I'm combining free & stong safeties cuz there are only a couple of names that could be possible BPAs at #89 to me. Team: Set long term with Jenkins and Harper. IAQ and Amaya backup. No pressing need so it would have to be overwhelming value to move there at #89. I count Mark Barron & Harrison Smith as no way they would be around at all when the Saints pick. I've got 2 guys I think could deserve 3rd Rd consideration. For either I dunno if the rating would be high enough for them to be the BPA though. Markelle Martin, Oklahoma St. A good well rounded centerfielder FS type. Not spectacular and has flaws but solid enough to have a NFL future. George Iloka, Boise St. At 6-3 213lbs this might be the safety type of the future to cover the Gronks and Grahams emerging in the NFL. Dunno if he is can't pass on at #89 but is certainly an interesting prospect Anybody else on the backend? Reply Back to Top |
| Brandon Taylor? Reply Back to Top |
| I like Taylor but do not consider him a great value at #89. Trying to gather up who we might hope could fall to #89 more than who fits in that rank range. He might go before then for a team with high need. 4th Rd and I say pounce on him. He looks kinda hybrid NFL to me... tweener between FS & SS. Reply Back to Top |
| I can't wait Til I have an hour to go through an read all these blues. Not being sarcastic Reply Back to Top |
| I think we need a safety more than you think. A safety that can cover. Harper is a major liability and it will get worse with Spags. The only reason Harper was relevant for us is that a-hole blitzed him so much. Other than that, he's bad. I'm not going to dog the guy, but he's bad. Jenkins should actually move to strong and find a free with more range. That would be ideal. Not much difference in modern football between the two safety types. With the Saints there was, because 41 cant cover anyone in the league. But that shouldn't be the case. I think the dude would be cut if his cap hit wasn't so egregious. Reply Back to Top |
| My first choice at 89 for me would be tbat kid from boisie. I also think harper is a liability and the bottom line is he is just not fast enough for coverage. He should play lb for a tampa 2 D. Reply Back to Top |

Brandon Taylor is actually being talked about a lot by analysts but I think it has more to do with an unspectacular safety class. I've been hearing a lot of Taylor going in the third round and a decent chance that he will be the third or fourth pure safety chosen. Reply Back to Top |
| Blues, you've pretty much sold me on Iloka in previous threads. He seems like a very good prospect to me and I'd be happy if we got him. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I like the prospect of a hybrid safety. Someone to rotate with Harper, or even Jenkins and stick Jenkins at CB and nickle sometimes. Makes for some interesting package choices. DB is our biggest need right now and i wouldnt mind at all if they called this guys name Reply Back to Top |

What about Janzen Jackson from McNeese? If he is there in the 4th or 5th I see some value. He played in the secondary when at Tennessee with Eric Berry. ![]() This post was edited on 4/16 at 5:37 pm Reply Back to Top |
| We still have Quddus. He has a bigger upside than Amaya imo. He's 6-1, 220, runs in the 4.4's and hits hard. Reply Back to Top |
| ole janzen...will be a boom/bust guy he's crazy as fricking shite and likely will flame out, but if he gets his head on right, he should be great as a FS if he's there in the 6th, which is very possible, we should take a flier on him Reply Back to Top |
| With the little amont of draft picks this year, i hope they dont waste one a guy with character issues. He is a great talent but if the saints give him a shot i would rather it be as undrafted. Him being from LA i wish him a great career. Reply Back to Top |
quote: uh Carl Nicks? 2nd round playing grade got in the 5th Rd cuz of charcter concerns. He worked out okay. Chris Ivory didn't get a sniff from other teams for character issues. Having an issue is a red flag but it is all a risk/reward equation. Perhaps the biggest head case risk in this draft is Vontaze Burfict Arizona State. Minus his head he might warrant late 1st to 2nd Rd grade. With his head who knows? Someone will take a shot. I'd guess 5th or 6th Rd. If you harness his issues then he could be a potential Nicks type story. If not he's another Odell Thurman. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I think the Patriots are going to reach for him in the second round. They've worked him out if I remember right and is exactly what our defense needs. Reply Back to Top |
| This is making me wish that Deandre McDaniel had worked out. Reply Back to Top |
| Janzen Jackson is a guy that I would love for the Saints to pick up. Major upside with character concerns, but he has talent and the ability to be a superstar. Reply Back to Top |
| review- the more I've looked the weaker this position appears in this class. Iloka and Brandon Taylor's probability of being available looks to be lower by the day. For that reason and not so much their inherent grade they might be considered stronger if they were available. Markelle Martin looks to be not a must pick guy. Injury red flags might even make him a stretch pick. If they did take him it would be because he had a clean bill of health. Janzen Jackson will definitely be selected but 4th Rd looks like a ceiling. I'd guess 5th with even 6th Rd possibility. So for any safety at #89 I see very very low probabilty at all of value meeting the pick. Reply Back to Top |
