The Houston Cougars formally announced the hiring of Major Applewhite as head coach on Friday morning, leaving the door open for LSU to possibly land Lane Kiffin as offensive coordinator.

Applewhite, who served as Houston offensive coordinator this past season won the job over Kiffin, former LSU head coach Les Miles, and Houston defensive coordinator Todd Orlando.

Kiffin has been linked to the LSU offensive coordinator job on Ed Orgeron's staff many times over the past two weeks. Orgeron worked under Kiffin at Tennessee in 2009 and at USC from 2010 to 2013 and both coaches are very close friends. Kiffin's contract with Alabama ends after this season.

When asked about Kiffin during his introductory press conference, Orgeron said he is "going to get the best coordinator in football."

Many expect Kiffin to leave Alabama after this season one way or another. He is reportedly a candidate for the head coaching job at USF now that Willie Taggart has left for Orgeron.

USF is meeting with former Texas coach Charlie Strong on Friday to discuss the job opening.

Some also believe Kiffin could possibly end up back in the NFL as an offensive coordinator.

Seems FIU is interviewing him for head coach now. If we do get Kiffin as an OC he'll only be at LSU 1 maybe 2 seasons. We should look else where.

I'm sure LK is a great OC. LSU needs to respect the fact he wants a HC position and move on. Having LK here for 1 year does LSU no long term good.

So let me get this right. One of the finest coaches in America that lead LSU to a NC and the highest win percentage in school history with the recruiting prowess to haul in annual top 5 recruiting classes can't land the Houston job? Hmmmmm

Give credit to Houston and Applewhite. They're a very quality football team with a lot of talent, and unfortunately, Les finished second.

I never really thought he'd go to Houston. Why would "One of the finest coaches in America" take a job that's basically a stepping stone to better jobs while taking a cut in pay? (I doubt Houston would pay CLM as much as LSU's obligated to pay him for his contract buyout.) I still expect CLM to take a position w/ ESPN or SEC Network while continuing to collect his buyout $$$$.

Wow! Didn't see that coming. Looking more like Kiffin to BR. Can't see him going to USF. I like Helfrich also, but Kiffin has SEC experience with a NC. Plus, he can run any offense suited to any personnel. Could be a major boost in retaining QB recruit Myles Brennan! Sometimes you take the good with the bad Tiger fans. Oh yeah, we get him away from Bama also! Lol

Did Daniel Tosh go to USF or UCF? Would be sweet for his Alma Mater to land Kiffin.

Lane isn't my first option, but I would be fine with it. He would be our best OC since Jimbo no doubt.
