VCU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin released the following statement on Tuesday morning to confirm the departure of Will Wade who has been hired by LSU.

Here is his full statement from VCUAthletics.com:
quote:

"I always meet with coaches after the season to determine the best ways to build their programs and put our student-athletes in the best position to reach their potential, McLaughlin said. "Will and I agreed on the necessary next steps, and we met all of Will's requests. He ultimately decided he would rather coach elsewhere.

"We have a world-class practice facility, a sold out arena every night and one of the greatest fan bases in all of college basketball. VCU Basketball is bigger than one person. We remain committed to ensuring that VCU Basketball remains a top-25 program nationally. We have a tradition of remarkable success that is focused ultimately on providing our student-athletes with a positive experience, focusing on our core values: student-athlete focus, drive to excel and integrity."

Just heard VCU has already replaced Will Wade with the head coach from Rice. So obviously, the AD was expecting Wade to leave. Just business.

The lack of "we thank him for his time here and wish him the best" is telling

This comes 1 year after he said he knew without a doubt that Will wouldn't leave because of what they have to offer. 1 year later, he salty af.

Thank You VCU and just like I recently became a Pitt fan, I'm now a VCU fan. Gotta get online and grab a shirt and cap. Best of luck except when we meet up, which I think we do next year.

He is the Associate school VP, and Athletic Director for VCU, and as such is committed to VCU, not a lone individual. I'd expect at least as much from our own AD if an LSU coach left for another school. I see nothing wrong with what he said in the least as the school's athletics director.

Can't blame him. We're still pissed at Saban for leaving! Money talks in today's world. Everyone and everything is fair game! I hope it works out for both sides. VCU has always had a decent basketball program. Hell, probably better than ours over the last 20 years!

I was never pissed at Sagan for leaving. I was pissed at the way he left and the fact that he came back to college football and took a job at a school in our division.

There isn't anything wrong with what he said. In fact, it is what he should say. This surely upset the fan base and players, and he has to do damage control. I think he did a great job tbo. I get sick of the cowardly, political correct types. Put the truth out there and be tough and confident.

Best of luck VCU! You've built a solid basketball foundation and won't lose that, shoot, you may even groom someone to be even better. Always tough when you lose good people but you'll bounce right back.
