Not as good as they use to be
by NOLAGreg on 3/21/10
Went there last night with my wife, first time back at the original location. I remember going to the old one on west end as being a very pleasant experience.

As we are being seated the entire dining room is very plain and wide open reminding me of a cafeteria. The west end location had many areas that were semi private, none to be seen at the Harrison location. My wife and myself did not care for this at all.

The wait staff were always around, our main waiter was a little off, as I asked him for a recommendation between two things and he just stood there with a smile on his face. Wife chalked it up to him thinking I was just asking the question out loud. Besides that, the wait staff was pretty good.

For an appetizer we ordered the shrimp remoulade, it was OK, nothing too fancy there. Presentation was lacking, but not that big of a deal.

For the meal we got a filet, a porterhouse, potatoes au gratin and garlic creamed spinach. My wife's filet looked good, my porterhouse was tough and full of fat. I wished I had gotten the filet as it looked much better. Flavor was very lacking, I guess comparing it to a Ruth's the steaks were greatly lacking. The potatoes au gratin were pretty basic. The garlic spinach was very good, the best thing about the meal.

We skipped dessert as thinking with the meal we had had so far we would be better off somewhere else.

I did not care for this place when thinking of the money you spend on meal and wine. We would have been much better off going to Ruth's or Mr. John's. The place seemed like a senior citizen center also, a lot of older people. We were the only ones in there that were 30 something. Food was nothing to rave about either. Next time I will go to Ruth's or Mr. John's. Which is sad as I live in Lakeview and remember the last time going to Steak Knife as the meal being on par with Ruth's, which i think is excellent. I overheard one of the waitresses actually saying on a few occasions that she like Ruth's comparable item better. Boy was she right.

I give it two stars as I remember it being well, if this had been my first time there they would have gotten 1 star. Go to Ruth's and you will be much happier.

Wonderful Food, but Atmosphere Needs Help
by nikinik on 3/17/10
We went for dinner last night and were very pleased. Here's the report...

Decor: The space was very lacking in this regard. The lighting was nice...but there was absolutely nothing on the walls...very boring space.

Service: Service was top notch. Absolutely no complaints there.

Prices: I'd say the prices were SLIGHTLY on the lower end compared to steak houses in New Orleans (a.k.a. Ruth's Chris, Mr. John's, etc.)

Food:

French bread and butter - French bread was hot and crunchy and delicious. Butter was just standard butter and did fine.

Butter and dill crostinis - These were tasty...though we really couldn't taste the dill. It was a great compliment to the crabmeat augratin.

We got a side of creamed spinach and it was perfect. A lot of the time when I get creamed spinach it's got way too much cream in it...it overpowers the spinach. Theirs was so delicious.

Crabmeat AuGratin - I'd give this a 7 out of 10. It was tasty and had enough crab but it could used a little kick/seasoning to it.

Wedge Salad - Really good...but it's hard to get this wrong. Very fresh lettuce, good blue cheese dressing.

Ribeye - Absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly! My husband asked for a little bit of blue cheese crumbles on the side and then he put it under the steak and then just let the juices flow into the cheese. VERY good.

Veal Medallions with crab and mushroom sauce - Really very good. The veal was cooked perfectly and there was a satisfactory amount of crab on it. No complaints.

Wine:

Saintsbury Pinot Noir - I love this wine and found it to be very reasonable at $50...especially considering I usually pay $32 for it at a wine store...so the mark up was minimal.

The bill: Not bad at all IMHO. 2 appetizers. Salad. 2 entrees. $50 bottle of wine. Total bill: $143 before tax and tip.

I would definitely go again I just REALLY wish they'd spice up the decor...and the crabmeat augratin.
