Trendy and tasty

Had a date night here recently - the atmosphere is trendy casual. There were a few bigger tables celebrating birthdays, etc. we had reservations for 7:30 on a Thursday and were seated promptly, but the place was soon pretty packed. Our server was great - he may have been a sous chef bc he was wearing a chef's jacket. Recommended a wine and app (which we had mostly settled on already) - the stuffed chicken wings. While there were only 2, they were very tasty. I could have easily have eaten more than the 1 I got. I had the crab 3 ways and my date had the pad Thai. We split our orders and I really liked both - especially the sauce on the crab. The PT was easily in the top 5 that I've had. Plenty of food, but not too much.

5 stars for La Thai

Took the wife and kids for an afternoon in uptown NOLA yesterday ... we started the day by stopping at La Thai on Prytania street... Weather was nice so we asked to be seated outside ... Good looking nice girl waited on us and provided great service ....
started with the shrimp/crabmeat shu-mai app *B* ....was pretty good, but was just 4 little dumplings....flavor was just OK, but I'm new to Thai so maybe that’s just the way those are ...
I ordered the "crispy oysters" lunch entree *A+* my oh my, this was a treat ...for only $13, I got a wonderful presentation of AWESOME crispy fried oysters, lump crabmeat, and an array of veggies in a sweet chili soy glaze...side of jasmine rice and spring roll ... this blew me away...the flavor, cooking, texture, and presentation was extremely good...lots of thought and care into this dish..
Wife got the lunch Red Curry Chicken *A* ... she liked it, I loved it ... was flat strips of white chicken soaked in a red curry that consist of coconut milk, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, basil, onion, & carrots .... side of jasmine rice ...tons of rich flavor ....I loved it.
Daughter got the kids shrimp glass noodles *A* .... best noodles I've ever tasted, she ate all up ....good stuff ...
I had a couple of NOLA blondes to get the day going, and our bill was like $50 ... this place is a winner and by the looks of it they get a lot of accolades
oh, and desert was next door at the creole creamery

Boom!

I ate there last night and it was awesome. You certainly have to be somewhat adventerous as thai food is full of flavor, but if you are, you wont regret this decision.
we got the:
APPS-
summer rolls - it's served cold, somewhat spicy, pretty good
dumplings- some of the best ive ever had
coconut shrimp- your prob thinking..."hey B blaster everyone and their momma has coconut shrimp...not so fast my friend, ive never had coconut shrimp that was this dynamic, it was the shit, bottom line
stuffed chicken wings- it was good, just not on the same level as the other dishes
ENTREES-
Thai Coon- ive got one thing to say, How could one dish have so much flavor? at 16 bucks, it's a hearty serving worthy of a to-go box, but you simply cannot stop eating it
Paht Thai- It was the best ive ever had- chicken and shrimp, layers of flavor that are simply unbelievable, and a large portion to say the least
Spicy Red Curry with beans- Whoa thats spicy, but come on guys im pretty sure you can handle it...this is south la...i'd choose the other two entrees before this one, but dont get me wrong this one was great
Dessert-(this was for the ladies, im more partial to spicy/salty stuff myself)
Red velvet cake- it was great, the icing was perfect and the cake was dense
choc turtle cheesecake- this was more my style, had a choc mousse on top and was a great finish to the spicy food we had just ate
Service-
Top notch, they took care of us in every way that they possibly could. There were five people in our crew, and they tailor made orders to ensure that everyone present could have a taste (i.e. only 4 coconut shrimps and they threw a fifth in there for us). Everyone knew the menu, including the busboys who answered a random question about what was on the plate correctly and then I saw him go fact check it on a menu just to be certain. A prime example of a person going the extra mile.
Dining area-
It's a cool place with a new and trendy feel. It's perfect for dates or just hanging out. They had flat screen TVs as well, which can be difficult to find sometimes in nola. Not sure about the beer prices for a game tho cause that wasnt really the route or evening was going...
As a whole, this was a great restaurant. Bottom line. If you like Thai food or if youve never tried it, youre doing yourself a disservice by not going here!

Not For Me

Let me be fair and state that I have never had Thai food so maybe it simply is not my cup of tea. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere although maybe a touch dark as it gets dark outside. We started with the spring rolls and the mussels. The spring rolls were crispy and hot and the sauce was quite spicy. Very nice start.
I have never had mussels before. I love oysters so I figured I needed to finally give muscles a try. Not for me. I am not sure if it was the way they were cooked or if I just don't like them.
The sauce was terrible and the muscles were about the size of green peas. They give you a larger number of mussels but half of the shells were empty. For some reason the dish is served with an order of pommes frites. Very odd combination.
I ordered the Duck Delight and my guest ordered a vegetarian dish. The duck was cut into cubes and fried to death. The outside was very hard and the inside was the consistency of paste. It was dreadful. The sauce was very spicy and flavorful but that simply did not make up for the duck. Since I have never had the dish, this could be the normal way it is cooked, but I sure hope not. There were a few nice size shrimp that almost made the meal palatable.
My guest enjoyed the vegetarian dish. I have forgotten the name of it.
I don't remember the total, but the prices are pretty steep. I may have felt that way because I was unhappy with the mussels and the main course. Service was just about perfect. The food was quick and the waitress checked our drinks often.
My guest likes this place but I can't recommend it based on my meal and the price. Since I have no experience with Thai food perhaps I ordered the wrong dish but I am not willing to spend that much again on another experiment.
