Exceeded expectations by a mile

I had read mixed reviews of dinner at Atchafalaya, both service and food, so with a groupon that needed to be presented when seated, I was nervous. There was no need to be.
Service was nice and leisurely, perfectly paced for a Saturday date night dinner. Our server, Sean, was very funny and laid back. The atmosphere was relaxing. There were old people, young people, dressed up people, dressed down people. Very comfortable setting as we hate stuffy.
The jalapeno cornbread muffins in the bread basket were heavenly. Light, airy, melt in your mouth with a hint of jalapeno in every bite. Yum. The french bread was good but the jalapeno cornbread muffins definitely outshined it.
We started with a cheese plate. Cheeses from France and Spain, and head cheese served with fruit, fig paste, pickles, and candied walnuts. Delicious. I only wish they served it with another bread instead of thinner slices of the french bread that came with the bread basket.
For the entree we split the redfish topped with crab served with green onion rice and sauteed greens of some sort. The portion was plenty for the two of us. It tasted very light and fresh, but then by the end you knew you had eaten something fairly heavy. How deceptive. And delicious! We also had a side of bourbon corn pudding. Didn't taste a hint of bourbon but the corn was delightful with a fresh off the cob taste. Rich, fresh, and satisfying.
Finished off with bread pudding with white chocolate sauce. Loved the texture. Not too dry, the sauce just sweet enough. My husband didn't care for it but he has decided he's just not a bread pudding fan unless it's bread pudding souffle at Commander's. I loved it.
The owner came by and introduced himself. We chatted for awhile about the restaurant, our meal, groupon, etc. This capped off our great experience and we found it to be a nice gesture. And I was nervous we would get mediocre service using a coupon, silly me.
We will be going back for dinner even without a groupon, and we definitely want to try brunch. Highly recommend.

Enjoyable Brunch

A nice touch during our short wait was that the bar area had a table set to mix your own Bloody Mary. The restaurant’s Bloody Mary mix was very good and our additions to the cocktail made for a good start.
There are many interesting items on the menu. We had the Eggs Atchafalaya and the traditional Eggs Benedict. Both were very good and are recommended. The Eggs Atchafalaya is interesting with crabmeat, eggs and hollandaise sauce served on top of fried green tomatoes. The accompanying potatoes with each dish were also very good.
The restaurant provides a quaint atmosphere and has outdoor seating. We sat in the front, upper area of the split level. While the tables didn’t seem any closer together than at most restaurants, it was somewhat difficult to have a private conversation, even with music coming from the bar area. Service was good.

Good Food and Atmosphere

Mr. Nikinik and I took some out of town guests to Atchafalaya Restaurant (previously Atchafalaya Cafe) last night.
Atmosphere: A-
I really love the atmosphere of this little place. Small...warm lighting and the character that comes with old houses. It reminds me of the houses in my neighborhood (Algiers Point). I would've liked that the tables be not quite so close together.
Service: A -
We could tell that our server was new and he was nervous...and could've used a little more polish. But all in all he still did a really good job.
Food:
Fried Green Tomatoes Topped with Jumbo Lump Crabmeat: $12 B-
The tomatoes were really good and fried perfectly. They were not stingy AT ALL with the crab...The lumps were big and plentiful. What threw this dish off a little was the remoulade sauce...as it was entirely too strong. It just had an overwhelming taste of strong creole mustard...which was just too much when dealing with a taste as delicate as crab.
Sweet and Spicy Shrimp: $10
One of our guests got this appetizer with a house salad to eat together as an entree. She raved about the shrimp.
Pear and Blue Cheese Salad: $10 B+
This salad was really good. It would've gotten an A...but I felt it was stingy on the blue cheese.
Crawfish Atchafalaya (fettucine): $18 B+
This was a really nice sized serving for the price. The pasta was cooked perfectly. I found the crawfish to be slightly overcooked...but not enough so to ruin the dish for me. One of our guests got this and gave it an A+. I am a little bit of a harsh critic on this dish because I cook crawfish fettucine that is out of this world. Second to mine, I LOVE the Crawfish Diablo at Maximo's...and didn't feel that this dish was as good....but still good none the less.
Shrimp and Grits: $23 A
I'm a big shrimp and grits eater. When I have seen it in other restaurants, it's usually a cream type sauce...or rarely...like BBQ shrimp. The menu described theirs as a smoked tomato and andouille broth. I'm not big on tomato broth based dishes...so I passed. I'm VERY thankful that hubby didn't pass. This dish was the winner of the night. The grits were so creamy and delicious! The sauce was an incredible compliment and the shrimp were cooked perfectly! Since hubby was going through it so quickly, I didn't get a chance to see how many shrimp were included...so I can't really say if it was a good value or not.
Other notes....
The bread: A+
Jalapeno cornbread muffins! They were fantastic...and they kept it coming. At first they were stingy on the amount of butter we got...but we just asked for more and they brought plenty.
Overall, I'd give Atchafalaya Restaurant a B+ and I'd definitely go again. Hubby and I are big on going out to brunch, so I definitely want to go back for that.
Oh yeah....this restaurant is on Restaurant.com at 80% off right now. Unfortunately I had forgotten my coupon at home!
Also note: This is one of the few restaurants on restaurant.com that does have day restrictions and can only be used M-Th.
