Bon Ton is a Very Good New Orleans Staple

I love the Bon Ton. I’ve eaten lunch here many times. It’s in an old brick building downtown with brick walls and it’s always very full and lively for lunch. None of us like the really quiet restaurants where you have to talk low so others don’t overhear you. We like activity and watching the people, so this is an enjoyable venue for us. I think we all had a cup of crawfish bisque to start. It’s very good there and may be the only place in town which serves the Cajun version with the stuffed heads. I can’t pass it up when I eat here. Two of us had the crabmeat au gratin which I love. Huge jumbo lumps of crab in a wonderful cream sauce. I sometimes tell them to nix the cheese on top and I don’t let them pour it from the crock to the plate as is their tradition. It stays hotter for longer in the crock and I like hot food. One diner had crabmeat imperial. Their version is buttery rather than with mayo and served warm. He loved it. Another had crawfish etouffee, one had grilled shrimp in a good sauce and her husband had grilled fish. All meals were served with a mixed green salad and their mustard vinaigrette. A few of us shared the bread pudding which originated at the Bon Ton, as I recall. I tasted all of the entrees and they were all very good. I have a hard time not ordering the cup of bisque and the crabmeat au gratin every time I go.

Service couldn’t have been better. The place is always packed for lunch when I go there and they know how to handle that very well. When I used to work downtown, we could get in and out in an hour in spite of the crowd.

Good Louisiana food in a pleasant atmosphere with good service. Great for a business lunch. The best thing here?, the bread pudding. It's absolutely the best I've ever had.

The Bon Ton Cafe is less formal than many fine restaurants (e.g., red and white checked table clothes).

Their food is very good. I would go back again for the Red Fish Bon Ton which was grilled, topped with lump crabmeat and served in a butter sauce. The large Salad Diane, which included shrimp and crabmeat, was good but somewhat overpriced for a dinner salad.

We were there for a late lunch and the service was very good.
