It's sad to think this happened in this day and age. The girls basketball teams from Tennessee high schools Riverdale and Smyrna have been banned from their playoffs after both teams tried to throw their game on Saturday. Per Fox News...
quote:

It was unclear what gave it away: one team intentionally missed 12 of its 16 free-throw attempts; the other did everything it could to avoid crossing half court in order to get called for a 10-second violation. One player stood inside the paint and motioned to the ref to call a 3-second violation.

The schools, Riverdale and Smyrna, were placed on restrictive probation by the Tennessee Secondary Athletic Association because it was determined both teams tried to lose Saturday's game.
The teams were trying to lose to avoid playing Blackman High School, the defending state and national champion. You can read more here and here. Check this out...

Wait a minute we bash these kids yet teams like the Cavs intentionally tank to get LeBron? This shite happens in pro sports all of the time- they just don't make it obvious. You telling me a team in the NFL with a game changer sitting at the 1st pick will pull out all the stops to win a game in week 17? I call bullshite.

DDaubie, apparently they did try to score in the other teams goal at one point.

Isn't trying to lose worse than actually losing? Why would not not want to advance even if you were going to lose the next round. It's pathetic and a terrible lack of sportsmanship by coaches and players. Makes you wonder why no one takes women's sports seriously.

I would be pissed as a player, you have to believe you can compete with anyone or you aren't going to succeed.

The originally article read like something out of The Onion, with players attempting to score on their own goals. Read more at Deadspin: LINK

This is stupid. They should have tried to put the ball in the other team's goal instead.

Tanking to put yourself in a more advantageous situation versus throwing a game for gambling purposes are 2 different things. Most fans beg for their teams to tank if it means better draft picks or a better playoff matchup, professionally speaking. Go look at the Saints board from December for proof. Why do we not expect and accept that this attitude will trickle down to the amateur level? One coach should have just called and forfeited and the whole thing could have been avoided.

Terrible. Coaches should be ashamed.
