This franchise would honestly work much better as a Netflix series rather than a movie. There's just so much from the story that would need to be cut in order to fit this into even a 150 minute film.
I could never make sense of the story while playing the games. Will be really interesting to see how Sony puts anything concise together in a movie format.
Side note.. the main theme from MGS 1 and 2 is still tGOAT video game theme song in my mind. The version where they play the melodic part with that epic build up makes the hair stand up on my arms.

Unless something’s changed, they can’t use that theme due to a settlement from a copyright suit years ago before MGS4 came out. That’s why it’s absent from all subsequent MGS titles after 3.
Hoping this movie is good, but not holding my breath. MGS is campy as Hell, has super-natural elements, cheesy characters (even the names are silly out of their video game element...Decoy Octopus, Sniper Wolf, Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven?). MGS1’s main themes are anti-nukes and genetics as it relates to control of one’s fate. In 1998, anti-nukes was a relevant topic. Not far removed from the collapse of the Soviet Union and concerns of proliferation of its old nuclear arsenal and former scientists. Now? Not so much. Just like no one is making movies about AIDS now like Philadelphia . It’s not 1993. Genetics isn’t a particularly interesting topic, either.
MGS2 and it’s prophetic theme of Deep State, information control and social memes affecting cultures would be far more intriguing. But that’d need some significant rewrite to blend MGS1 & 2 together into a 2-hour story.
There’s 3 hours of cutscenes in MGS1, 5 1/2 hours in MGS2. The dialogue obviously has to be super-cut, but how do you stay faithful to MGS1, keep the action, keep the gist of the dialogue and find room for the idiosyncrasies, too? It’s either gotta be a campy video game movie or a watered-down shell of MGS1. There’s a lot going on even if you only focus on MGS1. Remember, there’s a pretty significant backstory about Big Boss, Foxhound, Gray Fox, Snake & Campbell, Outer Heaven Uprising & Zanzibar Incident. There’s a lot to unbox for a movie. Would make way more sense to make a serial.
The only way I see this working into something good is doing Die Hard, MGS-style. I always thought Die Hard was as close to a MGS movie I could find that I could take semi-seriously. Lone dude sneaking around, trying to unravel a plot he stumbled in to, has some action scenes, “boss fight” moments, beats the bad guys, saves the hostages, drops some humor, and gets the girl. But that’d basically be re-imagining it and have it be loosely based on MGS. From what I’ve seen from the director’s twatter, he seems to be adamant about keeping faithful to the game. Don’t see that translating well. Happy to eat my words if I’m wrong.

I now think about this every time MGS comes up.
That Alert sounder is one of the best VG sound effects ever.

I probably have PTSD from that sound

I think he and Pedro Pascal are in every movie

This is probably going to look like the whole series thrown into a blender.
Which may still be better than Phantom Pain given reviews of some who played it and made it past the halfway point.

I played the MGS demo when it was available as a freebie from a promotion at Pizza Hut. LOVE that stupid game.
I bought the Metal Gear collection on my Switch, but haven't played any of them. Never played 3-5, but they're on my digital pile.

I’ve been playing the original MSX version of MG1 lately. Beat it once now I am going back through with the infinity bandana.

Die Hard 1 and 2 definitely fit the MGS mold.
Die Hard 2 in particular with skulking around the tunnels under the airport sure seems to match MGS1’s Alaska setting.

But how are they going to replicate switching the controller ports to defeat Psycho Mantis?

There will be some way to do it which isn’t interactive to show Snake subverting Mantis’ psychic abilities.
They change how you pull that off in pretty much every incarnation to a degree.

3 is getting a remake that should release later this year that Konami will hopefully not screw up. The original is a great game. My favorite of the PS2 era.
4 has some decent gameplay moments but literally half its length is cut scenes.
5 has the worst story imo but the best gameplay in the series and still holds up for me as the best stealth action game ever made when it comes to game play.

This will never see the light of day as long as Konami and Kojima are at odds.

I think in the graphic novel, Snake has such a broken psyche that he is able to see through the projections.

The MGS series has always been a cerebral, narrative heavy series with deep writing and thematic exploration.

If they wanna do a series they could do one based off death stranding, another Kojima creation.

Last one I played was the one with psycho mantis. I watched a YT video by Dunkey on MGS recap. Even though I heard everything, I can confidently go play and not be spoiled by anything bc I can’t remember all the quadruple triple crosses going on

This was pretty funny to read because Kojimas latest game has a character named Die Hardman
