I'm sure it seems dumb or counterintuitive to someone who's never smoked but smoking good cigars for the first time was the catalyst that led to me quitting. I got into cigars 15 years ago and after a dozen or so of them over the course of a few months, I began noticing all the chemical tastes in cigs.
Exactly.
I happened to catch a radio show about cigars and a guy called in with that question. He had quit the cigs and wondered about a cigar. The host said to wait a year or so before he tried. That's what I did, and the cig cravings went away immediately. I suspect a pipe would be similar.
With the cigs, I was going to smoke a pack a day come hell or high water. I can go months between cigars. You also really need a place and time to enjoy a cigar. You need to be able to kick back for an hour or so with a fine drink (doesn't have to be alcoholic) and a peaceful surrounding. It will put you in a happy place.
