I have had this problem many times with my 2008 Silverado. Dust and dirt gets in the switch at the point where the little metal button glued to the rubber flex sheet touches the contacts on the circuit board. The dirt makes what I would describe as a tiny booger and prevents the circuit closing.

I use the grater/shredder attachment a good bit. Useful for a big block of cheese or cabbage for homemade sauerkraut. ...

I have a 2008 Silverado with 392k miles. Assuming 15 mpg and $2.50/gal gas, I’ve spent about $65,000 just on fuel. Add in maintenance, tires, etc., I’d say it’s approaching $80k. ...
