re: What Made Trent Johnson So Bad at Recruiting?
Posted by Michael Stein on 3/22/24 at 11:18 pm
Thanks to everyone for responding. There are some good insights in this thread.
Other than the awesome first season, my most lasting memory of the Trent Johnson era is Andre Stringer launching 3s from about 35 feet. And Del Piero, of course....
What Made Trent Johnson So Bad at Recruiting?
Posted by Michael Stein on 3/22/24 at 5:36 pm
Reading that thread about John Brady’s tenure last night made me think of those Trent Johnson years. Can any basketball insiders explain what made him so bad at recruiting?
His first season here and his success with the Lopez brothers at Stanford proved he was a good Xs and Os coach when he had g...
re: Coolest birth given names in sports
Posted by Michael Stein on 3/17/24 at 4:01 am
Arkansas had a centerfielder on last year’s baseball team named Tavian Josenberger. That’s a cool name. Sounds like a general from the Holy Roman Empire.
Fullerton had a center fielder back in 2011 named Austin Kingsolver. Arizona State had an outfielder named Rocky Laguna back in 2005.
And we...
re: Favorite LSU v. Rice moment

This thread brings back some memories. As a kid, I took a piss in the urinal next to Wayne Graham before that Saturday night heartbreaker we lost in 2005. He was nice talking to fans. The old Box didn’t have a separate bathroom for visiting players and coaches, so they had to mingle with us regular ...
re: Gold Cup: Mexico 0 vs Qatar 1 (90'+10) FINAL: Qatar says "NO WAY IN SAN JOSE" & advances!

Carlos Queiroz is a good coach. It often isn’t pretty, but he always seems to get the most out of what he was to work with. He’s had a fascinating life, too.
Qatar fit right into this confederation. Outstanding CONCACAFing tonight.
#23 for Qatar looked like a create-a-player on FIFA when...
re: Cocca out at El Tri ahead of Gold Cup
Posted by Michael Stein on 6/20/23 at 9:33 pm
There’s only one thing for them to do now. Hire El Chelis or Miguel Herrera again. That would be great comedy.
All the El Tri fans I know are furious with the FMF. It’s bad enough to be overmatched by the US, but now even Canada has surpassed them. That really hurts their pride. The gringos...

BJ Callaghan is the Hal Hunter of USMNT managers.
GOAT
r/LigaMX will be fun tomorrow. This is the worst we’ve embarrassed Mexico in a long time. ...

This is the best we’ve looked against Mexico in a long time. They had no threat at all except that one ball over the top to Henry Martin that Turner had to deal with. We’ve thoroughly outclassed them so far. They look so slow and unathletic compared to our guys. We just have to execute better in the...
re: Kentucky Pitcher

I randomly met his parents walking around by the Old State Capital on the afternoon before the Friday night game that we lost. Very nice people.
He pitched in that game, as well. Our bats did pretty well against him....
re: Official: LSU Host Announcement
Posted by Michael Stein on 5/28/23 at 7:49 pm
Whoever draws Campbell as their #2 seed will be pissed. That’s a scary team. Probably should have hosted over Indiana State, but geography was working against them.
Probably South Carolina, since presumably they were the #15 or #16 seed chosen, so the committee will give them a strong #2 seed and...
re: Fox Sports’ US World Cup coverage is an unmissable abomination
Posted by Michael Stein on 12/5/22 at 8:04 pm
Hey, at least they didn’t inflict Fernando Fiore upon us this time. I’m sure he’s great at his role, but his role is completely unsuitable for American audiences.
I love Clint Dempsey, but he isn’t good at articulating his thoughts. And Donovan is fine pre-match and post-match, but way too monoto...
re: Groups E & F Final Group Stage Day Thread: CRO/BEL, CAN/MOR, JAP/ESP, CRC/GER
Posted by Michael Stein on 12/1/22 at 6:39 pm
We will always have that brief moment of bliss where it looked like Costa Rica might top the group with a -5 goal differential. That would have been amazing
They’ve truly mastered the art of shithouse goals. Just ran out of gas and Germany’s talent finally wore them down. ...
re: WTF with Gregg’s coach’s shirts?!?!
Posted by Michael Stein on 12/1/22 at 6:35 pm
Gregg is gonna rock a Battletoads T-shirt against the Dutch. I’m glad the world got to experience the spontaneous joy of a Gregg behind-the-back bounce pass on Tuesday....
I’m sure the French have sent someone home during one of their implosions
Yeah, they sent home like a third of the team in the 2010 mutiny. They had to explain themselves to the Prime Minister after that embarrassment.
I’m just glad the rest of the world gets to experience...
re: Every USMNT World Cup Win Last 20 Years
Posted by Michael Stein on 11/27/22 at 6:35 pm
The Portugal team we beat in 2002 was pretty stacked with Luis Figo and others. It was a shock they didn’t make it out of the group.
And I’ll never not be pissed about Edu’s winner against Slovenia being overturned for no reason. That was some bullshite. ...
re: Gregg is tactically inept
Posted by Michael Stein on 11/25/22 at 3:26 pm
To be fair to Gregg, we were trying to sub Aaronson on for a solid 7-8 minutes before finally having the opportunity to do so. The ball stayed in play for a crazy amount of time.
Ideally, Aaronson and Reyna would have come on around the 65th minute when England were starting to seize momentum bac...
re: Fox Coverage
Posted by Michael Stein on 11/24/22 at 11:52 am
I’m sad Mark Followill isn’t a part of the Fox coverage team for this World Cup. He’s one of their best commentators, IMO, and he works well with Warren Barton.
Maybe he was too busy with his work for the Dallas Mavericks....
I think it makes us look like amateurs to be honest.
Oh, I agree. I’m fine with him dressing like that for qualifiers, but I think it’s very unprofessional for him to dress like that at a World Cup match. At least wear a nice button-down and some slacks, Gregg.
Not a big deal, b...
re: tWaistcoat Warrior
Posted by Michael Stein on 11/23/22 at 9:13 am
I think it’s funny all the other World Cup managers are dressed to the nines, and Gregg just wears that black T-shirt he loves with STATES on it.
I thought he might dress a little more formally at the World Cup, but maybe he just wants to be comfortable on the sidelines....
