Where’s the best place to visit in Oregon?

Thinking about Oregon/Washington state for next year but not sure where to visit. Crater lake maybe? What’s a great place to see in Oregon?

TulaneLSU’s Top 10 places to visit in Oregon:
10. Portland
With all its flaws, it still can be a beautiful city. The Japanese Gardens and Historic Overlook House are must see. The Pendleton store downtown is also amazing!
9. Oregon Coastal Road
At 350 miles you could do the entire coastal road in one day. But you could also make it an entire week long trip. There are many state parks along the way, and Oregon has one of the best state park systems in America. From Coos Bay to Fort Stevens to Tillamook (the dairy tour is not interesting), there are so many beautiful places to see and great hikes to do.
8. Silver Falls State Park
Some of the best waterfalls in America. Reminiscent of Hawaii.
7. Florence
A cute town, this place is home to great hiking and lookouts.
6. Mount Hood
Uncle and I have climbed it three times. It is in the world of mountain climbing and easy climb, but in the summer it is a moderately dangerous climb due to falling ice.
5. Seaside
This could be on the Coast Highway list, but this scenic little town, which feels nothing likes its Floridian namesake’s superficiality, is one of the last towns in America that lets one drive on the beach.
4. Oswald West
Another Oregon state park that is good enough to be a national park, OW is the OG in terms of beautiful coastal hikes.
3. Ecola State Park
My favorite Oregon state park because it contains Lewis and Clark’s final journey to the West Coast. It is a rugged trail through dense rain forest and some daunting sheer cliffs. You are awarded at the end the beach from which they shot the final scene in Point Break. On the south side of the park are easier hikes, and a beautiful overlook of Cannon Beach and its iconic Haystack Rock.
2. Astoria
Mother says, “There are only two true cities on the West Coast, Sam Francisco and Astoria, Oregon.” Avoid the beer places, as they are serving poison, and enjoy the Columbia River, historic architecture, Oregon Film Museum, the docks, and consider doing a Dungeness crab or salmon charter.

On some days it cracks my Top 10 national parks in America. Besides being inspiration for Pendleton’s best national park blanket, the water in the lake is among the clearest I have ever seen.

How many days should one allocate to crater lake? I’m thinking now of doing a moving around trip.

Have family in that State, so have been quite a bit.
Some high level suggestions if just around Portland:
Go to Mt. Hood
Multnomah Falls (not too far away)
Willamette Valley for wine tasting

Had some family work at Brooks. Nice winery to visit. Note there are well over 500 wineries in the valley, so you'd have your pick of great ones.

I had a night booked next week at Crater Lake Lodge, but cancelled. (I've been once before). This year they had 56' of snow including snowfall this month. At this point you can access the lodge, and not much more. I cancelled that night and redirected to skirt the coast for the day.

Go stay near McMinnville or one of the surrounding towns. Go to wineries all day. You could make a day trip to Cannon Beach, but you have to drive through the mountains which is tough with a wine hangover.

Yeah, I think I’m gonna have to eliminate Crater Lake because we’d be going next May/June, and it seems the weather is unpredictable.

I think two full days is sufficient to explore Crater Lake. Sure, you could spend longer, but you will get a sense of the place with two days and be able to do the marque hikes including Cleetwood Clove, Garfield Peak, Watchman Peak, and Discovery Point, all of which are easy if you are in reasonable shape.
As always, stay in the NPS lodge. Crater Lake Lodge is very good. It is not as nice as Ahwahnee, but has a very good restaurant and outstanding veranda with rocking chairs Mother just adores. Seriously consider doing the Wizard Island cruise, which was about $50 the last time I visited.
Please avoid the poison producing wineries some are recommending, especially the social degenerate who suggested driving under the influence of that most deadly drug. Why people think it is acceptable to tour a death facility that is partly responsible for 100,000 American deaths annually is inexplicable to me. Your vacation should be about virtue, beautify and the good. Going to a winery or a brewery, except to protest those human polluters and defilers, goes against all that is pure in this world.

quote:definitely do this, plus the hike up wizard island. this is also the only way you'll actually be able to get "into" the lake. be warned, the hike down to the warf is STEEP, not bad going down but coming back up is definetely strenuous

Think you'd really like staying around Bend. And I still wouldn't rule out Crater Lake.
But...
If you want the coastal areas:
We've done two trips to the coast. The first was to Yachats. Drive along the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway. Hike at nearby Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. They have some great local restaurants. A great trip.
Things To Do In Yachats.
The second time we went to Florence. We met up with some family. We stayed at the quaint local hotel the Park Motel and Cabins. Kind of had a "Twin Peaks" vibe to it! They camped at Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park. Beautiful area. Visit the Dunes. Or drive down towards Dune City and visit the Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area. Spectacular.
