In Florence if I recall, we stayed at the Hotel Davanzati. Really great location, staff was great. Its not luxury but instead a very quality 3ish star hotel with an excellent location and nice rooms.

Can't recall where I stayed in Rome but it was kinda close to the Trevi fountain and I did not find that ideal at all. Noise levels sucked

In Florence a nice Air Bnb might be more cost effective. There really is not a bad area to stay.

In Rome, there are a lot of bad areas to stay, but most hotels are great.

My favorite hotel in Florence is the aforementioned Davanzati.

My favorite hotel in Rome is the Nazionale which is near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, on the same Square the Italian Parliament building is on.

In Rome, the Terrace Pantheon Relais. It’s a couple of blocks from the Pantheon.

In Florence, the San Firenze Suites and Spa, which is a block away from the Palazzo Vecchio.

Both of these should be in your price range, and might even be a little below it. I stayed at both of them a couple of years ago and wouldn’t hesitate to stay at either one again.

We stayed at Hotel Lungarno but sadly the price has gone up since we stayed. It has a Michelin restaurant on the premises and the view at night of the Ponte Vecchio is superb.

Same for Lungarno. We enjoyed Hotel Splendide Royal in Rome. Great restaurant as well as their terrace and location.

That is a really high rate. What amenities do you want for that? We stayed at a AirBNB is Trastevere in an amazing location. I like a more local feel and it hit the spot in Rome.

Likewise, I have a spot in Florence for a month this fall. Right across the Arno.

We stayed at the H10 Palazzo Galla in Rome. Good value and excellent location.

We are staying here in June. Domus suites

From what I’ve been told it is a great location in Rome. Near Pantheon and walking distance to most everything.

We love Hotel Davanzati. Its family owned and run, also in the center of everything in Florence. Our last time there, my luggage failed to arrive on the flight and the Davanzati staff continually called the airline to see if it had arrived. I finally got it some days later but everyone at the hotel went above and beyond. The hotel breakfast is very good and all coffees are made to order. There is also a nice happy hour from 1830 with free wine and Prosecco. As they point out on their website, guests must go up some 25 steps from the street to the entrance of the hotel before getting on an elevator. This was no issue for us, but it must be mentioned as the sole drawback to an otherwise wonderful hotel.

In Rome, look for something in Trastevere. Mostly small properties but it's a great location. We stayed in the San Franceso last year and it was great for the money. Probably less than $150/night.

We are cheap travelers, but we stayed in Navona Sky Palace last year for about 300Euro per night. It is a small property, and a small room, but for just two of us it was great. Rome is a very walkable city, but this is a little closer to the Vatican, but pretty easy walk everywhere we wanted to go.
