Family trip San Diego

Planning a trip to San Diego about a month from now. Have some younger kids and probably wanting to do a vrbo/airbnb just for the sake of separate bedrooms. Looking for recs on areas to stay and whatever other advice y'all world travelers have to offer. Probably gonna rent a car but it would be nice to be able to walk to a few spots too.
Our activities are probably going to be more or less standard fare stuff. Zoo, at least one beach day, downtown explorations and museums, legoland.
How bad is traffic getting around? Any must see/dos?

Zoo is a must
Legoland how old are kids? 10 is likely too old
Sea world
If you have a car, go to La jolla see the seals
Take boat across bay to Coronado and you can access beach at hotel del Coronado
Cabrillo national monument and let kids go see the tide pools

I would highly suggest the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park.

Kids are under 10 and all into Lego. As are the wife and I if we're being honest. We did Dollywood a few years back and they loved it so I think they should have fun at legoland.
What about random wandering areas like old town, torrey pine, little italy, gaslamp quarter, sesame place? Any recs on those?

Went last year as a family of four. Kids were 8 & 4. We love SD. Stayed in La Jolla. We loved that area with La Jolla Cove. We hiked Torrey pines. Kids did it easily and loved it. We spent a day in Coronado. Rented a golf cart on our Coronado day and hit up the beach. We of course did the zoo and it did live up to its hype. We spent very little time downtown, but did catch a night padres game.
Traffic was not bad at all. Y’all have a blast.

Do the navy museum on the aircraft carrier.
Do not enter a little building in La Jolla and pay $15/person to walk down some stairs to see a cave.

I meant to ask about the midway museum. I would very much like to check it out, but not sure about the rest of the family. Wasn't sure if it was worth pushing for it. Sounds like a yes.

Gaslamp is near padres stadium and go eat at spaghetti factory
Little Italy best meal we ate
Old town has the authentic Mexican
We did tour that went to La Jolla Torrey pines and the glider port with incredible views
We did not do the midway museum but we saw the aircraft carrier from up close didn’t have time to do tour

My family of 5 loved it. Kids aged 7-15.

I took my kids to San Diego in the summer of 2019. Kids were 9 and 7 at the time. Absolutely great trip. Here's what we did (best I can recall):
Day 1: Legoland
Day 2: In-city zoo
Day 3: Sea World
Day 4: Air craft carrier, hang out in Balboa Park
Day 5: Safari Zoo
Probably could've spent 2 days at the in-city zoo. It think we only made it through about half of it.
Rented a VRBO condo in the city, in between the airport and Balboa park. The air conditioner was out the entire time we were there (mid-July), but honestly we didn't even need it.
Rented a minivan and drove everywhere. Honestly I don't remember traffic being bad at all.

Plan on spending some time in La Jolla. Besides being incredibly beautiful, the area around the Children's Pool is cool for kids.
The Children's Pool is really a beach area where seals congregate. You can normally get on the beach pretty close to them.
The entire walk from the Children's Pool to the caves is really beautiful. The caves is what it sounds like. you walk down to a cave area that looks out into the ocean. It's pretty cool.
The cove is a great beach area for swimming and sightseeing.
Lunch or dinner on the deck at George's on the Cove (reservations a must).

Going in July with kids 5 and 11.
Staying at the Intercontinental and will have a rental.
The only thing firmly planned is a Padres night game on Friday. Gonna go to the Midway at some point because we’re staying across the street.
Otherwise nothing else is planned. I don’t think we’re gonna go to the zoo.

Buy the City Pass, get a deal on different attraction and don’t have to stand in line day you get there. We did Zoo and Midway, but pretty sure options for LegoLand and Seaworld as well.

The best advice I got from this board is this: Your zoo ticket includes a ride on the zoo bus any any point in the day. Many people pass it up and go back to it later. Don't do this. Wait outside the gates before the zoo even opens, and then when it opens go immediately to the bus for your ride.
The animals have just gotten moving for the day and are still being fed. Animals that would normally be sleeping and out of view are all out for their feedings. We legit saw a polar bear full fledge dive into his pool.
Also - While the kids may not care, don't just breeze past all the really amazing plant life they have. They said on the tour that their plants in sum are worth more/were more expensive than all of the animals combined. Super awesome exotic plants you won't probably ever see again. We have more photos of those than we do animals.

Really appreciate all the advice. Kids are all 5+ so hopefully they'll enjoy the midway. They'll definitely enjoy the zoo. They love the BR zoo and Audubon. Will have to make La Jolla a stop as well, I think they would get a kick out of the seals. I'd love to see a padres game but I don't think the rest of the fam would enjoy it enough to justify the time and financial expense.

Go hike the slot canyons in Torrey Pines park. It’s an amazing landscape that you will find nowhere in the south, plus it’s not very crowded and a great place for kids
The only reason we left is that my wife and I were so damn tired, my kids wanted to stay another two hours
