Family-friendly New York City hotels that aren't super expensive?

I get that it's been a while since I've been to New York, but hotel prices seem insane. I paid $131/night at the Hampton Inn in Times Square back in 2016. The same hotel is $423/night currently.
I can't seem to really find anything for cheaper than that.
Is that just the price for hotels in NYC nowadays that aren't in some distant area from Manhattan?

Just read this article. Seems like it's impossible now thanks to politics:

I did see resort fees listed on the rooms I was checking. So that regular ole Hampton Inn that's $423/night is probably closer to $550/night.
Who the frick pays those prices? Morons?

A perfect storm has hit the hotel market in New York City, driving prices to historic highs.
The ascent began, partially, in spring of 2022, when Governor Greg Abbott of Texas started busing migrants to New York. So far, Texas has sent 15,800 people, according to the Associated Press. The number could be closer to 50,000 though, when the migrants sent from Florida, or coming on their own, are added in.
Because of New York City's 1981 Right to Shelter Law, it became the legal responsibility of Mayor Eric Adams to find a place to house them humanely. He did so, in many cases, in the hotels that used to accommodate budget tourists. Long-established, low-cost hotels like The Row (formerly the Milford Plaza), The Belnord, and others, entered into contracts with the city to house these newcomers and stopped accepting tourists.

The second shoe dropped in September of this year when Local Law 18, passed in 2022, went into effect, and made it virtually impossible to operate a short-term rental in New York City. Under the new law, it is illegal to rent an entire unit for fewer than 30 days (except under special, and hard-to-obatin licenses), and owners who wish to rent out part of their spaces must apply to do so with the Office of Special Enforcement.
As a result, according to a report by Slate, the number of Airbnbs and other short-term rentals in the city plunged from a high of 50,000 before the pandemic to just 7,000 today.
The dramatic drop in available inventory means that Gotham hoteliers in Manhattan and Brooklyn in particular can charge whatever they damn well please—and most of them are doing just that.

I've seen rates as high as $700 a night for run-of-the-mill hotels once the now-ubiquitous resort fees are included.

Just cancelled two pending business trips to NYC because I couldn't get rooms under $450 a night. Not paying that. Told clients I would link up with them at a trade show.
NYC is a no-go for me right now.

Are they keeping them in Manhattan? Why? NYC is big

Check out the Washington Square Hotel near Greenwich Village and the Hotel Indigo - NYC Downtown (near Wall Street). I've stayed in both of those in the last 3 months for less than $300 a night.

Sorry your budget for your trip gets abused now thanks to illegal immigrants taking up the affordable rooms leaving only higher dollar rooms for you
Such a shittey deal . Except for the immigrants who get to live high on the hog

I mention this anytime someone asks about a NYC hotel…. Check out Hotel Beacon. It’s in Upper West Side near the 72nd St station, which is one stop from Times Square. Get a family suite, it’s like an apartment. Has a Bedroom with either 2 doubles or a King, a separate living room with a sleeper sofa & a small kitchen. It’s near a Fairways Market and Trader Joe’s so you can stock the kitchen. We’ve been going for years & they’ve never let us down. It’s not a full service hotel with room service, but there are many great restaurants in the neighborhood.

Saw the Lexington for under $300 a night. Not cheap but not outrageous.
