Looking at a few options leaving either ORD or MSP to go in late April or early May.

Option 1: Taking the entire time to see Italy and perhaps work way up to Milan and perhaps get into Switzerland. Would likely buy a round trip flight out of FCO.

Option 2: Doing a multiple country hopping destination. Start off flying in AMS and then do mini stops in Paris, Brussels, and go into London. It'd be shorter per city but would see more countries. Also, flying into AMS and out of CDG or LHR on the way back is pretty reasonaboble.

Wife and I were discussing options but wanted some input. TIA

Less countries the better and will always be my opinion.

I like focusing on one county and enjoying yourself, taking it in, letting yourself get immersive.

I don’t think two weeks is that short of time for Amsterdam, Paris, London though. 3-4 days in Amsterdam (with a little side trip one day), 6 days in Paris with a France day trip or two, 5 days in London with a day trip to Stonehenge etc. I don’t think that’s an overwhelming trip. I’d skip Brussels for sure.

thanks man, apprecaite some guidance. Both of them look good and Italy would be a first for both of us as well. I have been to London and Paris, but not Netherlands. Either way, I'd still see some new places

Italy is wonderful. Florence is one of my favorite cities on earth and is a total must imo.

Italy also has a LOT to do so figure out what you want to do and narrow that down too. A lot of people do the Rome-Florence-Venice thing the first time, with one side few days like Cinque Terre or sienna or Modena etc.

Some do South and go to Amalfi etc.

Just figure out what you want. Italy is great.

Just did 3 countries, would not do it again. Spent too much time in airports and had a flight cancelled. Stay in one country or at least be able to take a train to a second.

Italy

My favorite two weeks in Europe includes a week in the Tuscan countryside and ending with a few days in Venice.
One time we started in Rome, drove to Tuscany, stayed at a villa just south of Florence for a week, then drove to Venice.

In 2018 we flew in to Florence, rented a car, stayed at the villa for a week, stayed in Florence for three days, took the train to Venice and flew home from there.
Fantastic vacation

If you are someone with the means to go to Europe frequently do less. If this is like a once or twice in a lifetime thing do more imo. It's all about your preference though. Do you like to be on the go and do/see a lot of things or just like to relax and take in a few?

I'm more interested in the latter though and we have three young children so it's super expensive and probably something we could once or twice while they are growing up.

We are planning 15 days next summer flying from ATL to Amsterdam for a couple of days, train down to Munich for 3 days during Euro 2024, flight to Barcelona for 3 days , train/bus to Pamplona for 2/3 days for Running of the Bulls, then up to Paris for 4 days with day trips to Normandy and Mont St. Michel and flying back out of Paris. Really hoping it all works out.

Option 2 seems like a lot in a short time and could be more stressful. Personally, I would do Italy but I've been pretty blessed to see a decent amount of Europe in my lifetime. I haven't had the chance to see much of Italy yet and 2 weeks sounds wonderful. Just my opinion

That's way too much of an itiernary with three young kids. You're going to feel like (and you will be) constantly traveling.

Like I said it's not for everyone, I would get bored spending a week in one city trying to act like that makes live like a local. If I want to sit around Ill go to the beach.

I’m all about moving and seeing different places but your itinerary is horrible. You need to plan it better. Move north to south at least. The issue is you are going to have a delay at some point and that’s going to frick up your entire schedule.

Do amsterdam, mont st michel, Paris, munich, etc.

Given that, OP personally I always recommend people go to multiple countries their first trip to get a taste. As said you aren’t getting everything in one or two weeks anyway. But there’s plenty to do all over Europe to stay in a location for a week or more so just figure out what you want.

Some of the things I have to work around being in Munich July 2nd and Pamplona sometime between July 7-9. Also flying out of Amsterdam and Paris are much cheaper than Munich or Barcelona/Madrid.

It's really only two long travel days between AMS-MUN and Pamplona to Paris. My kids will think taking the train is cool, at least the first time. Everything else is just like 3 hours.

Your beach comparison is not a good one. These are cities that are hundrerds of years old with many sites to see and things to do. The locals don't do those things. No offense, but with three young kids it just sounds misrerable. I think you'll find your actual travel times are much longer than you think with getting to the airport early, checking in and then going through customs in each country.

I can see why you wouldn't want to spend a week in the Tuscan countryside but in a city there are just so many things to do usually. Anyway, enjoy your trip.

Possibly, I'm aware it's a risk and there will probably be a hairy day or two in there but they are pretty good travelers and overall I think they will do well.

Unless it's changed in the last few years, and I'm pretty sure it hasn't, this is not a thing in Europe.

Sure, that's why I'm staying 3-4 days in each one.

How can you possibly do all of that in 15 days?
I would love to be in Pamplona for the Running of the Bulls. I would do that, then go to Barcelona. Barcelona to Paris is an easy train ride. Rent a car in Paris and drive to Bayeux. Take an Overlord Tour of the D-Day Beaches one day. Drive to Mont St. Michel the next day. Relax in Bayeux the next day. Then drive back to Paris for the rest of the time.

I get that but IMO you are doing too much. To put it into perspective you are flying to NYC, going to Chicago, then going to Miami, then finishing in Atl. If someone asked you if that was a good idea in 15 days we'd say...

Trains are fun with kids...for 45 mins. Trains when not packed are nice because kids can get up and move. But trains with kids that are packed, suck. Just an fyi. A packed train isn't that much better then an airplane outside of its easier to board and you are city center, big positives certainly.

There's so much to do between Amsterdam and Munich its just crazy to go to Spain IMO. But it'll be an adventure for sure.
