If suing Apple, what about carrier stranglehold on phones?

Say you want to get an unlocked phone that is not an iPhone. Unless it's one of four or five brands, good luck.

Where I live, you can get an iPhone or Galaxy through Cspire. Doesn't even offer the Pixel 8's.

My carrier is Xfinity Mobile. iPhone, Galaxy, Motorola, and Google. THat's it.

You go to ATT, Samsung, Motorola, Google, and Sonim

Verizon, pretty much the same.

T Mobile: Probably the broadest offering of phones.

Now, I am not talking about the carrier offering of phones although that is what I posted above. I am talking about the whitelisting of phones.

There are great phones out there. Oneplus 12, Oneplus 12R, Nothing Phone, Asus ROG, and others. However, good luck as most of them are not whitelisted by the carriers so if you don't buy one of the select group, even unlocked off Amazon or Best Buy, you won't be using it as it won't be able to connect to a network. Indeed, Carl Pei of Nothing Phone, formerly Oneplus CEO, said the carriers are the main reason the American market is so different and why consumers have limited choices for phones here.

SO if the feds are going to this trouble for Apple, what about the carriers?

Well, the feds are in bed with the carriers in that they get a copy of all data that rides on the carrier networks. Could be the reason for this.

But you're saying if you get a oneplus1 phone that supports LTE or whatever bands the the N. America companies use it will not connect?

i'm not in love with tmobile but i have 5 phones and a car-odbii device and pay $150/mo and pretty much buy iphones (for the females) or androids off swappa whenever we need a new phone.

never had an issue with lock-out but i did accidently pick up a 'locked' oneplus 8t and didn't realize it..there's a bit of tombile branding on it but not enough to bother me. whenever i replace it i'll be more careful to look for an unlocked model.

Most of the carrier restrictions on phones are related to bands/frequencies, not what the company "allows" to connect.

True, that and the fact that most people are making payments on their phone and don't actually own it until they pay for it in full.
