I am not suggesting there is no fake voting in India, I am sure there is. But I don't think it changes the ultimate result, since it's a parliamentary system.

Considering India is a developing country, India's track record in holding relatively secure elections is amazing to me. I grew up in India, left India when I was 24, and have lived here for the past 21 years.

I remember the violence and fake voting (it was actually something called booth capturing) that was rampant when I was a kid. Things have improved a whole lot since then.

The reason why the election is so long is because it happens in stages/rounds. Each seat (equivalent to an US congressional district) gets to vote on one specific day, and it is only in person. No mail in voting or anything like that. Only a subset of seats vote on one round so that all the peace-keeping resources line army, local police, para-military forces can all be deployed in a concentrated manner.

I think it’s interesting that Iraq has more secure elections than the United States and likely India does, too.

“White supremacists call back to 19th century slave control by forcing people of color to make their mark in order to vote” - CNN headline, probably

This is a cool overview of how it works. I think I read something like 80%+ of people there vote for Modi. Is that real? Does he have that much unwavering support?

It amazes me how people worry about China yet India has 1.45 billion people and is a nuclear power.

...and hates China...and Pakistan. I have no problem with trying to work as closesly as possible with India where our interests align--and they seemingly do on many things. It's also another country that Trump had a better relationship with than Brandon does.

As a whole, his approval rating might be > 70-80%.

But Modi's party's (BJP) vote share varies from state to state. Even in his own state, during last election in 2019, 62% of the people voted for his party.

Generally speaking, BJP's vote share varies from anywhere in high 30% to low 60% in most states, somewhere between 40-50% being the most common.

Here is the data - LINK
