NEW: Judge Merchan addresses Trump directly regarding his continued violations of the gag order-
“It appears that the 1,000 fines are not serving as a deterrent.”
“The last thing I want to do is to put you in jail. You are the former president of the United States, and possibly the next president as well.”
“There are many reasons why incarceration is truly a last resort for you.”
“To take that step would be disruptive to the proceedings”
“But at the end of the day, I have a job to do”
“The magnitude of such a decision is not lost on me.”

Close but they won’t let you post the kind of dog and pony show this actually is. Chicken bans people who post that.

This would be a criminal contempt charge. As such, he would be violating his bail agreements in his other three cases meaning he could be locked up in pre-trial detention. It's risky on his part. Better for him if he doesn't get another violation. To be locked up until the Atlanta trial or, even worse, until the Supremes decide on immunity in the other two cases would pretty much end any campaigning he could do until the election.

Most people here would prefer he be out and about for the rest of the year rather than locked up.

Merchan et all are already trying to dictate his schedule so the difference between what they are doing and criminal contempt is, frankly, drawing attention to restricting Trump’s movements.

Not a good look to do that to the leading presidential candidate.

Merchan would be giving Trump EXACTLY what he wants. If this is not political ( it is) then throwing him in jail only increases both Trump's poll numbers and increases the perception that this is all about politics. He would do better to let Trump run off at the mouth.

My god, you can't even criticize a jury and court officials in a criminal trial anymore? It's outrageous.

It's not like anyone would actually get put in jail for 10+ counts of criminal contempt in any other trial.

Im reminded of the umpire who told the manager if he yells one more word at him he will be ejected, the manager replied..."is motherfker one word".

That's probably his best campaign strategy tbh although it would be terrible for the country.

What specifically did Trump say that caused this ruling? What was the substance of the contempt?

One could make the argument that motherless is a legal term. Lawyers use it so much.
