Speaker Mike Johnson rejected calls from Republican hard-liners to defund special counsel Jack Smith during an interview with Politico which was broadcast on Thursday.

House Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, a committed Donald Trump supporter, has made a number of bids to end funding to Smith, a special counsel for the Department of Justice, over the past year. However in the interview, Johnson claimed you can't "wave a wand and just eliminate the special counsel."

quote:

Referring to calls for Smith to lose federal funding, in a bid to frustrate his legal actions against Trump, Johnson said: "That's not something you wave a wand and just eliminate the special counsel as a provision."

He went on to defend the function of special prosecutors, who are appointed to investigate suspected wrongdoing in a specific case. Johnson commented: "There is a necessity for a function like that because sometimes the Department of Justice, which is an executive branch agency, can't necessarily, without a conflict of interest investigate or prosecute the president who's their boss, or the president's family."

quote:

Asked whether he would try to amend appropriations bills to remove special counsel Smith's position, Johnson replied: "No." Any such move would be extremely unlikely to be passed into law as it could be blocked by the Democratic controlled Senate or President Biden.

Johnson had the magic wand in his hand and gave it to Jefferies.

I agree with him in principle. But the people involved have no principles, so he should've done it.

Agreed. Hakeem would definitely be worse than Johnson. And that is who you would get.

Done what? Bring a defund bill to the floor so that it could fail in the House, or even if it narrowly passed, not even be taken up by the Senate?

He should have done nothing. He should have held the purse strings tight and made the Dems capitulate if they wanted things funded. Same with the RINO's in the house. Money makes things happen there.

He severely hurt the GOP house races this fall.

They actually should have done their job before that and taken it to the supreme court. He is supposed to be "appointed" not anointed by the executive branch, which totally debunks Johnson's argument "for an independent council apart from the executive branch".

Second, he is supposed to be a govt employee which he was not at the time.

yes MJ gave Hakeem the gavel. but if funding to Jack Smith is cut off now. This makes Judge Cannon's job null and void. As JS was illegally appointed in many legal and politico facets.

Schumer announced their fake amnesty, and the republicans are all for it screaming BIPARTISAN. Biden will take a bow and hope to gain votes.

the turncoat republicans need to be primaried already. Trump fell for their snake oil acting as moderates. Shame on him and all of us.

THEY ARE ALL DEMOCRATS but a handful. Amash was a mole in the HFC FFS!

Do you guys have zero principles? Of course deals have to be made with the left but I don't understand the cheerleading of Johnson. These weak spineless POS cut deals that are detrimental to the country and the GOP, yet are being cheered.

That might work if he was not already appointed and working. It would take defunding the DOJ as a whole since his funding was already baked into the DOJ budget. There is a reason that NO Special Counsel / IC has ever been defunded that I can recall going back to Watergate

Republicans overall are powerless because they don't control the Senate and have had very small majorities in the House. Without sizeable majorities in both, it's a debate society and Johnson knows this.
