My 270wsm Tikka is awesome, but ammo is a bitch to find and doesn't look to be gaining popularity any time soon.

I want something in a .308 or 6.5 cm...haven't decided yet and would be fine with either.

Synthetic stock, preferably not black. Camo, earth, etc. no heavy barrel or threaded needed.

Budget up $800-1000 I guess.

Also, any manufacturer guarantee sub MOA?

Either another Tikka in 6.5cm or a Bergara as its a Rem700 footprint. Could change out the stock later, same as Tikka. Bergara is much easier to get parts like a trigger if you wanted to modify it.

I’ve got a tikka t3x lite stainless I’ll sell you in a 6.5CM. I’ve just moved on to a PRC and it’s been sitting the safe. Fired less than 20 times and in basically brand new condition.

Was really leaning toward a bergara. I have no good reason, but was going to get something other than Tikka for variety's sake.

Get the 308. You'll never be without ammo and it's cheaper.

I sold my 270wsm this year because brass is a bitch to find, never mind ammo. It'll go the way of the 7wsm and 7mm Ultra Mag. They will quit making the rifles. Ammo will always be a bitch to find. Leave the gimmicky cartridges out.

Winchester XPR in .270 or .30-06, .308 if short action is something that’s important to you.

Best feeling in the budget category for me, can get a full quality setup with a vortex crossfire or Leupold rifleman for right at or under the price of a tikka, or if glass is important to you, there’s room to upgrade. Nice enough to feel confident with it, but not so nice you want to fight someone for leaving a shopping cart next to you off the car lot.

I’m not a fan of these flavor of the week boutique cartridges, I want something that’s been carried in a gas station for 40 years

I wouldn’t get caught up in this. The majority of hunting rifles made today will probably shoot more accurately than the hunters using them.

If I was buying a new rifle I’d get a Winchester model 70 featherweight in 308.
But I love blued steel and wood stocks.

You could just buy a new barrel for your tikka in the caliber of your choosing or possibly rebore yours. Tikkas are all long actions.

I believe all the new PRC stuff uses the same bolt face, and you could even buy a prefit barrel and DIY. Nothing to it, and you'd have a better rifle for your money than you'll get off the shelf.

If I had to buy a new deer rifle for $1000 I'd get a tikka t3 anyway.

This is a tikka t3x. The only reason not to get one is if you want a threaded muzzle or they don’t chamber what you want.

I’m interested in the Weatherby Mark V hunter if we’re just spending imaginary money.

Nothing wrong with a Bergara but make sure you hold the one you want before paying for it, they make a few models that don’t look considerably heavier but handle like a cinder block. The extra weight makes them shoot lights out though.

I handled a Bagera the other day and didn’t like the feel at all.

Buddy of mine bought a Bergara terrain for a mule deer hunt last year, put a gigantic nightforce on it and was shooting clovers. No idea what that gun weighed but with the scope and bipod it had to be 12-13lbs, shot like a Cadillac on a bench.

By the third day it was staying in the truck while he carried his old wood stocked “backup” gun, got tired of lugging that fricker around.

There’s been a trend over the last 5-6 years with long range shooting becoming popular that people want benchrest guns dressed in camo. Companies like Bergara (and plenty others) are more than happy to sell them. I’m hoping the pendulum swings back the other way as people hunt more with them.

Paint it. I wouldn't let that be a factor.

If they wouldn't have gone up in price so much I'd recommend a model 70 extreme weather and paint it black. They are very nice rifles but I think they're over $1600 now. They come with a bell and carlson stock which is fantastic. They were around $1000 when they came out. I think a featherweight can still be had around $1000 but obviously they have wood stocks.

Another good route to go is buy a howa 1500 barreled action from brownells and get whatever stock you want for it. Those are damn fine rifles. Basically a dramatically improved model 700. M16 extractor, great 2 stage trigger. A bit heavy but otherwise great. Lots of stock options out there for it.

It really doesn't make sense to get anything other than a tikka from a purely practical standpoint. They are light and ultra durable and shoot great. I dont like the clip, but even if they were double the list price they'd still be the best option IMO. Just rebarrel yours.

the Winchester XPR can go toe to toe with the tikka t3/3x, it’s a pretty much just a great value x bolt.

I already have a .308 which covers 95% of everything I want to hunt and has good ammo availability.

So I want to go in the unusual direction and get a 9.3x62mm.
