Did they pay you to take them fishing? Let them fish. It’s an expensive lesson that they will learn.

I guarantee the negative reviews will never mention anything about gear failure if it was brought from home. It'll only say "I paid $XXX and I took home one fish. Never again!"

I've never heard of a charter guide that didn't include gear, tackle, and bait in the price of the charter.

If you're dealing with beginner level clients who probably buy their fishing gear from Walmart, I can see why they'd want to bring their own shite. In their view, your $10 daily rental fee is 20-25% of the cost of them just buying an Ugly Stik combo that they get to keep and reuse.

For inshore charters, I'll bring 1 or 2 of my own rods because I prefer baitcasters. And my setups are probably on par with the quality of the guide's personal gear.

Not sure where you get off thinking people shouldn't bring their own gear. If that is your rule then state it at time of booking.

If I called you and you told me that.. we would have a short conversation. Same goes for just about everyone I know and fish with.

Pretty sure they hire a guide to put them on the fish. Sounds like you have a need to keep score by fish count. Just let them know up front.

Garuntee, there is already something on social media about what a terrible time they had only catching 18 reds by 10 am.
Last week the couple i had were big trout fishermen, the first two rods i tried to tye corks on had rotten mono. Second two weren't much better, half spools on both.

This wouldn’t be a barrier to booking the charter and people will absolutely break gear doing dumb stuff so it would make sense to set this money aside for replacement rod, reel, line, etc….

That being said I’d probably speak to the Captain ahead of charter and bring my own rods riggged for what the day will entail.

Requiring the customer to pay for gear that gets damaged or broken by their negligence is 100% reasonable. The rental fee just doesn’t sit right with me

Slinging popping corks with a baitcaster is way more difficult than most can handle but Pride

If I can sling an A-Rig with a baitcaster, a popping cork is nothing. I like to bring a couple of my setups with me on a charter just because I am familiar with them and it's quality equipment too.

How would you feel if I brought my own Livescope too?

When he tells your client he casts like a girl. With his wife in the boat fishing with us

When he spends most of the day berating us.

When anytime we got on a decent bite, he’d pick up and move (I believe he was using our trip to scout for later trips)

There’s 20 other posts in here of people that like fishing with their own gear. I prefer baitcasting for throwing anything other than popping corks, and this was before live shrimp started dominating the fishing. He had nothing but spinning tackle (understandably). “Typical Louisiana guy” because I want to bring my own stuff? I’ve fished charters all over the country for decades, and he’s the only one that vehemently tried to keep me from bringing my own gear.

So you can GooDat buddy.

If fly fishing I only use mine. My fly fishing stuff is absolutely better than theirs.

This. I was in Alaska last summer, and booked a fly fishing trip. I didn't have the ability to bring my gear along on the trip, so I used the stuff the guides supplied.

I swear, they had me chunking 1/2 ounce Clousers with trailer hooks on a 7 wt. rod with 5 wt. line, and a 5 foot straight leader.

Absolute trash gear, that wore my arse out casting it all day long. No fish, either. One guy with us found a washtub sized hole filled with Dolly Varden and wouldn't let anyone else in after he had already caught a few.

You need to include the gear in the cost. Never have been asked to rent rods on charter trip. If you expect them to rent them, just add it to the cost of the charter as the rate per charter and don’t give them an option.

Agreed, I never charged for gear, aside from those that broke them or dropping them overboard. Tips I would fix if it was broken close, at next eye it was a replacement. Line and all that was covered by sponsors.

WTF. "Renting" gear for an extra charge on a charter is crazy. Just roll whatever you think it's worth into the cost and don't be weird.

It depends on the guide. Some cater to the live bait popping cork crowd and that’s what you’ll get. If you go with an artificial only, release type of guide, they will likely be taking some good sticks for the most part and it’s expected they’ll bring their own gear

So you are using bait casters?
Oh yeah I’m definitely bringing my rods and reels. But I’m set up way better than most in that dept.
however I would have already asked what we would be doing so I knew what was best to spool my reels up with
