Kemo,

I see you made 3 new friends today. Did you teach them that special casting secret too?

Nope, pretty much made sure they had bait and netter fish. Hard to teach using 1970 bait casters with 4:3:1 and half a spool of mono.

I am no guide but I would imagine most wouldn't care as long as you didn't bitch about losing fish and then go write a google review that your captain couldn't put you on fish when in reality it was because you were determined to use your own shite. Only charters I go on are a few days a year with Charlie Thomason for work trips and all my shite stays at the house.

I’ve never had to “rent” a rod while charter fishing. In that scenario I’d definitely be bringing my own gear

Who is "they"? Rental what?

Just to clarify, does the guide service you work for not include fishing gear with the charter? It sounds like that is the arrangement. How much is the 'gear rental,' and what does that include?

The one time I chartered I wished I brought my own gear.

He had spinning gear spooled with mono for throwing popping corks and you really needed braid on a casting setup throwing jigheads to catch them that day.

He had his own personal casting rods that he used to catch the majority of the fish because they weren't hitting on popping cork and you couldn't feel the light bite on his customer gear.

I get why he does it that way (because most people chartering an inshore trip are fishing illiterate) but I'm a big enough gear snob that my stuff would've run circles around his customer gear.

$10 per day, includes a hook and cork, $40 to have it cleaned after they dunk it while determining depth, replacement rod tips when they break them reeling a fish to tip, new line when they cast over one another and i cut 25 yds of new braid off.
No charge for cutting the zip ties & plastic wrap off of the new combos.
When you book your trip with the office they tell everyone what is and isn't included and fees.
Slinging popping corks with a baitcaster is way more difficult than most can handle but Pride.

Is that you Brent Roy?

Me and him almost threw down at the dock when he didn’t want to let me bring my own shite. I’m paying, I’m saying. And that was just the beginning of a not so pleasant day with him.

It depends on what kind of charter you are talking about. For a off shore charter, I would use their gear. If you are doing a freshwater or inshore, I would consider bringing my own.

Half the people I took on my freshwater charters brought their own rods. Even though I had all high end St Croix and Shimano gear.

Wait, what?

I’ve never had a guide not just have the equipment on the boat and ready to go as part of the trip.

On an offshore charter I always bring a popping rod Saragossa/ Terez combo and a jigging setup Trinidad A/ Terez combo. I've always done it for the fact I reel a spinner with my right hand and don't want to have to swap the guides reel handles over, plus every one else can share the boats dedicated popping rod while I have my own.

I've not taken a charter in several years, but never paid for anything but charter fee, gas, and tip.

I bring my gear every time and it is usually better than the guides. I once traded the day for two of my rods. Another time the guide who I had never met said he would shake my rods and if they felt good enough he would let me fish with them, after the trip he asked if I wanted to sell him a rod or two".

WTF
I’ve never been on a charter where gear, bait, and tackle weren’t included
Do y’all charge extra to clean fish too? LOL

Nope, cleaning is included.
Well i just received a call from the boss about yesterdays trip.
Guy called and complained for 30 min, gist of the call was he didn't want to catch reds, he didn't want to pay for live bait, i didn't have 3 qts of bait in my live well, i kept short fish (always measure).
Little did i know how this thread was going to be so theraputic.
If you're reading this GFY dude.

I'll be honest, this would make me second guess your business. I'm not hating, just giving feedback.

My expectation for an inshore gulf coast spec and redfish guide from Tampa to Texas to have 8-10 spinning rods around $150 -200 each. Something like a penn battle 3 or shimano or diawa comparable.

The issue with charging for tackle is exactly what you got. Someone's going to bring garbage and then your ability to put them on fish is limited. That's just as much your policy's issue as their choice.

I bring my own gear because half the guides just want to bring you somewhere and have you jerk a shrimp under a cork next to some rocks.

I’d much rather fish with my baitcasters and artificial.
