Didn’t used to shoot Dosgris, but lately we’ve had slim pickings. I shoot them now because I love my dog

Honestly though, you’re not going to tell the difference after they’re marinated and wrapped in a popper.

I don’t usually shoot pouldeau because it’s not much fun… but they’re really good to eat.

Swamp is dry. No woodies. Hoping for a decent second split

Limits both mornings by 8. Teal, woodies, sprigs, and mallards. If you got water they are there.

bullshite. You probably went all the way to the coast unless you were hunting baited ponds.

What coast? The wax is all the way to the coast.

But I was more surprised about somebody hunting in Venice one weekend and the wax the next… that’s determination.

We killed limits in Gueydan opening weekend but we have flooded fields.

I hunted the wax, Bateman island and the Belle Isle area and killed nothing.

Avoca Island sounded like a war zone Saturday morning. But those are some dirty arse frickers

If you want to kill birds you have to go all the way down the Atchafalya River to the coast or down Calumet Cut

East Pass or the light house.

Open water. That’s where roost.

Better get there early and plan to stay late. Pack a lunch.

I guess I don’t understand why you called bullshite.

I haven’t hunted the wax since I was a kid… but we were always in open water.

The Wax is a big area some folks don’t really know the boundaries. Or call some areas The Wax when it’s not really the the Wax

The Wax that 99% of people refer to and hunt is the Wax Delta of the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. For all intents and purposes it is "the coast" and "open water". Yes there are marshy inland areas of both deltas. But most hunting, or good hunting should I say is done on the emergent flats at the end of the passes. And no you don't have to pack a lunch and spend all day. You just hunt the tide...

Are you including the marsh around the actual old Wax Lake as "the Wax"?

I always say Grey duck for Gads in MS and get a weird look in the blind.

Never heard of the Cajun slang for duck species until I found this site. I actually like it.

I grew up with and still use the old Cajun names for the birds as well. One I don’t hear anymore is that mallards were often called French Ducks and French hens by the old timers in the late 70s and 80s.

Maybe I don’t hear that anymore because we don’t have mallards down here anymore.

3 hunts in the books at our blind and it's been basically 90/10 teal/spoons. Have not seen any other species close enough to shoot. There were more ducks in the air this morning though.

Ive never really encountered anyone calling mallards by those, but i guess to piggy back off of that mose people here refer to Mottled ducks as Summer French. Presumably because they look like a mallard hen and are generally around most of the year.
