We moved into our starter home about 5-6 years ago, then shortly after pandemic had our first kid in it... it's not tiny but could be bugger for us, but u feel stuck here. Could we a fford to buy bigger? With some stretching yes... but I feel like doing so would require me setting a pile of money on fire

Counterintuitively, it was the Ron Paul movement, which the NEOCONs successfully sidelined. Then it looked like we would get Ron light with Rand, then Trump sucked all the oxygen, and the rationality, out of the party. I’m honestly not sure what the path forward is now for the Republican Party.

Eta: And I agree that the current path for the Democratic Party appears terrifying.

I like Rand more than most politicians, but he just can't ever seem to get any traction on a national scale. He's too mild mannered I guess and doesn't have a strong personality.

Of all of the nonsense bluster I hear about Trump “breaking” people, I think he broke Rand. He was flat out unprepared to stand up to Trump’s bullying, it made him look weak, and he knows it. And he’s never really recovered.

Now, this isn’t a personal gripe for me. I own my own home, but my household income is also significantly higher than the median. My point is that “kids these days just want to keep up with the Joneses” is bullshite as an explanation for why young people can’t afford to buy homes.

People “at the median” in 1990 probably weren’t doing much better than they are now.

I’m guessing you thought you were firmly “middle class” then (don’t we all?), but I suspect most who do had family incomes that were “significantly higher” than the median when looking back.

Here, this says median household income in La was just over 36k in 1990.

Btw, I also don’t suspect or believe there’s any more a “keep up with the Joneses” mentality now than there was then either.

I am not sure anything will happen until the current generation of leaders retire. I think Republicans should run on an anti-inflation policy as the center of their economic policy.

1.) Replace the Fed with a computer algorithm. Audit the Fed every 6 months.
2.) Back part of the money supply with precious metals.
3.) Encourage companies to barter and not tax the transactions.
4.) Work sharing accounts that allow companies to save for lean times so they don't depend on federally funded bailouts.

I think middle class lifestyle expectations are much higher today than they were in say 1985.

1. Build the wall
2. Scale back the green spending
3. Retool foreign policy

My dad was college educated and a reasonably high earner. He made about what an engineer made. We lived in a 1600 sq ft ranch house with a family of 5. He drove a 10+ yr old Monte Carlo.

We went out to eat maybe once a month, if that. Our vacations mostly consisted of driving to Houston and going to Astroworld and catching a few Astros games.

I think most people making an upper-middle class income today wouldn't find that lifestyle acceptable.

I don’t think that has a shot in hell at being a viable driver of voter engagement over the next decade or two.

This should not be an expectation as the "norm". 1100 sq ft is not comfortable for a family of 10. I don't care how dishonest with yourself you are about it.

Boomers really screwed up the housing market. They complain about people using terms such as rizz and cap or trans when that really has 0 effects on anyones life. What they did to housing which effects every single person in the US makes them the worst generation in history.

They are completely unaware. My real estate agent was a boomer. When I closed on my house and was there signing the papers, she said something like “I hope my son will be able to by a house by 30” and I said, “yeah… well, hopefully he gets a really good paying job, it’s not what it used to be” and she said something snobby like “well, he’s going to make more than I used to make”

The increase in housing prices have much more than eclipsed wage increases, not to mention this boomer idiot went to school for probably $750 a semester.

There are so many boomers who literally think millennials and gen Z won’t be able to afford houses because they pay $5 for a cup of coffee.

People have too much JUNK instead of cash. I have a 2600 sq ft home and now that the kids are gone it’s too damn big. I now realize it was all a waste of money even though I dont accumulate JUNK. But of course the wife does as is the norm.

I will agree with this,but...

I'm not sure we want to say that we want the next generation to live exactly like we did.

If we aren't doing things to make them progressively better. Then what is the point or the goal for the next generation?

This is whete these sorts of generational battles raise the problem. It's a reason the boomers are so selfish.

So your goal was to make sure the next generation can't be any better off than you? And they deserve it?

This is weak-minded nonsense by US-raised millennials. Get out there and get what you can. If you fail, look inward.

It's called willful ignorance.

Not to mention boomers are a miserable bunch of people. They thrive on it and wear it like a badge of honor. One of the most entitled and insecure generations ever to come along.

Seriously? I enjoyed that the Trump administration put more limits on H1B visa holders which directly benefited me. Also pulling out of the TPP was a win for all, do you want to try again?
