Who’s in the wrong? Police cruiser vs. ATV
Posted on 5/3/24 at 6:37 am

This dash cam video shows a police officer deliberately angle his cruiser to block an ATV rider going fast down a road in New Haven, CT. The collision forced the ATV rider to slam into the cruiser. He is suffering serious injuries.
Before the incident, several bicyclists and pedestrians can be seen moving slowly in that lane.
Excessive use of force? Or did that cop save lives?

ATV rider, illegal to drive on the street.

Both wrong but I think about those kids that the cop passed up. They could’ve been seriously injured or killed by this idiot

A video of two idiots that probably struggled to get out of high school.

Maybe he should have turned on his lights and siren instead turning in front of him and causing a bad wreck.

That guy on the ATV waited a while to try and stop. Should’ve been wearing a helmet if you’re going to drive like an Ahole.

Anyone blaming the ATV rider is a cop-loving arse-kisser. Deliberately wrecking the ATV rider should be met with criminal charges and a massive lawsuit.

Stupid tricks yield stupid prizes.
Doubt the ATV rider will ever do that again.
Operating an ATV is illegal on public roads; just like if you drive impaired, you subsequently forfeit most rights when you make that original decision.
Zero sympathy for the injured individual.
Natural selection at work.

ATV rider in the wrong.
1) Driving illegally on the road in the first place
2) Excessive speed
3) No helmet
4) Driving in such a manner as to not maintain control of his vehicle
Policeman made correct move to block the lane as
1) Had the ATV rider refused to stop and had continued, there was no place to turn around to pursue
2) ATV rider, at that speed, was an impending danger to others he was approaching on the road
3) Had the officer been able to turn around and pursue, it would have created a greater danger to the other users of the road
Police officer made the right move. The ATV rider had determined his own fate when he made the decision to ride on the road on a vehicle that did not have the proper lights, signals, or design for paved public roads. His excessive speed and inability to control his vehicle are further evidence of his disregard for the law and for the safety of himself and other individuals.

And you, sir, are an idiot much like Splat the atv driver. Don’t want stupid prizes? Don’t play stupid games. Cop pulled into the lane to dissuade Splat from continuing his illegal activity.

I don’t completely agree with the Cops tactic. But he had to do something. At that speed, that ATV idiot would have ran over a few bicyclists before he even knew what was going on.

This ironically applies to both parties. One guy was just more instantaneous.

Good post, and I'd need to know some backstory.
Cop wasn't running code, so I'm not clear if this was an ongoing call, or he just took action? Seems like the cop was going pretty slow.

This seems like the right answer. Also, the ATV guy most likely could've easily gone around the bike riders, so the ones talking about him potentially harming them are overreacting a bit.
But obviously both the ATV dude and the cop made stupid decisions that day.

The ATV guys shouldn't be riding on the road. The cop should have not pulled out in front of him, what did he think was going to happen? Possibly killing someone isn't worth the crime of illegally driving an ATV on the road.

Good post, thanks.
Clarified why the cop did what he did, and the ATV guy did have room to stop, and also cop had his lights on.

this youtube news video provides more information. Cop had his lights on and was going slowly. ATV's & motorcycles prohibited from being on the path. People watch 1 video and jump to conclusions.
ATV 100% in the wrong.
So this video should be in the FAFO thread instead of having its own thread.
