But don't forget that Chelsea's Live now is close in size to The Varsity, and are probably a little more aggressive in booking touring acts...

We had that with the Bayou and The Spanish Moon (though each had a cap of 400 or so) and Chelsea's MK I & II (I REALLY miss MK II, under the overpass... both rooms/stages that it had... and screw that builder owner for being a dick) and The Red Star and North Gate Tavern and Mud & Water (thank you, JW), and, though tiny, I did some cool shows (like Explosions In The Sky, and a band from NYC that had the same drummer as The Yeah Yeah Yeahs) at The Thirsty Tiger when I had to...
Now we have the Mid City Ballroom, and I would think "BYOB" would be popular, but older people usually complain about it... younger people do show up for things they're interested in a lot more reliably than the older crowd...
And Beauvoir Park is great.
And The Brick Yard is cool, but not really oriented towards music (the stage has been downsized compared to when it was Mud & Water and moved into the corner) and when I randomly pop in it's usually a trivia or comedy night or something...
BR is in the strange position of having a bunch of bands that were invited to play at Jazz Fest the past two years (!!!), but aren't booked into the bigger venues...
There's a big disconnect with talent... this has become a tailgate mentality cover band town. We don't really have any music press, anymore...
I don't know... now I'm getting depressed thinking about it...

They just had a batch made... Brad called me to see if I still had the artwork I'd done for it saved somewhere (I did... on floppy disc, in a graphics program that no longer exists...), but it's up on streaming services.

Yeah, they did the show with Acid Bath at Papa Joe’s and Sammy claims he ripped off a ton of his tats. Then when they played the Varisty Richard Condon was broadcasting live and talking about him bringing a cow on stage to frick or sacrifice. Clearly there was no way that happened, so did they just pay him to hype it up like that?

Do you guys still have shows like Kyle or Darkroom used to do for high school kids? I miss the house shows at Mitch’s place.

We did, but that place (Onyx Theatre) closed back in October.
A few different people are trying to make up the difference with house parties, but losing 524 was a big blow to the scene.

Late 80s-to- about '91 in their original Baton Rouge/LSU student "local band" phase...
then they moved to California for a few years, then moved to New Orleans right before releasing the breakthrough record in the mid-90s.

I know bands that have booked gigs at The Basin Street Club or whatever it is on Third Street, but the crowd there is not into a band that plays originals and it seems impossible to get the people who are to go these... it's much more geared to hip hop and DJs and dance music, cover bands and "bro" country bands... seems to try really hard to be like a French Quarter bar with glowing neon shots, etc.

I know one thing for sure, the local metal scene today is much better than in the early 2000s. I remember when Catholicon was basically the only metal band in town. Then Thou came along and they got pretty big. There's some decent bands out there now, especially since it feels like the BR, NOLA, and Lafayette scenes are all blending together.
