Absolutely. BR never truly recovered from the burning of the Caterie.

Today, there’s a lot of solid bands, but there’s nowhere to play because there aren’t enough venues.

I assumed someone rehashed this thread because of this.

What great nostalgia this thread has brought. To answer the OP’S question, no the 2000’s wasn’t the best. Have to go late 80’s to mid 90’s.

On another note, there were so many great places to go hang out at back then. I miss the early 90’s Baton Rouge

Saw the Dick Nixons at the place that’s now Bogies but can’t remember if it was still the Dugout or one the other names before Ernie’s. That band was always entertaining to watch.

Wow! Mean Tree. Would love to get a copy of that CD. Any chance of that happening Geaux?
Also, does anyone remember Becky Sharp?

Literally saw them last night, but they’re pretty mid as far as 80’s cover bands go.

In the early to mid 2000’s, I was a big fan of Liquid Sand and Meriwether.

I would say 1991-2001 were the better years, especially with the Varsity reopening in the fall of 91'. There were many nights when you had decisions to make between the Bayou, Chelseas, Murphy's on occasion and the Art Bar turned The Church turned The Spanish Moon. Not to mention -- old staples like the Thirsty Tiger and Tabby's.

Many in thread have mentioned some great shows, but don't forget the Varsity also hosted Tori Amos,The Breeders, Pavement, Public Enemy, Wilco, White Zombie, Jon Spencer BE, No Doubt, Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews (for free), ICE T, Lucinda Williams, Rev. Horton Heat monthly it seemed.

The Bayou hosted Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse, At the Drive In just to name a few that darkened an already grimey, dark doorstep during that period.

Toward the end of my long college career in 99/2000 -- I helped book some good shows at the Moon as well -- Frank Black, At The Drive In, Blonde Redhead, Alejandro Escovedo, Dick Dale, L7, Kermit Ruffins (before many nola bands were coming) .

The Red Star, Chelseas and the Moon helped carry through the rest of the decade until they all ultimately closed their doors for various reasons.

It was a great scene and people really went out and supported shows.

My cousin used to play in a band around BR, so I went to the Caterie to see them a lot. Good times.

I don’t remember what the band name was at first but I think at one point it was Rewind.

Rhett whatever his name was I believe was from Laffy. Great band though. Really thought they’d go places but fizzled out.

Had a show this week with Maylene & the Sons of Disaster. They’re booking a decent slate of touring metal bands like Attila.

Speaking of peak 90’s:

Also, did anyone catch Marilyn Manson around here when they were living in NOLA? I listened to book on a drive yesterday and am bummed I was too young for those shows.

Ah... good to see (or whatever applies) you...

Hey, a couple of years ago there was an Advocate/Picayune headline one morning that said "Tyler Perry's Father's House on Fire" and I didn't know if it was a news story or a movie review

MM played at Papa Joe's on the tour for their first record...

I knew people who knew them in N.O. so once ended up in the same bar as them in the Quarter... they're scarier without the make up, frankly

They are, kind of... it's just not a priority for the remaining owners, as it was the late Tim Hood's pet project... running a music venue is never something that makes accountants happy because it runs similar to a movie theater - the money from the tickets overwhelmingly goes to the talent and the venue takes the concession sales. Since most college students are under 21 these days (though, traditionally, LSU might have students that stick around a bit longer...) that means they can have a packed venue and still barely make any money, unless they charge a few bucks more for people under 21 and negotiate that the venue takes that, which I actually had to do bit when I booked shows at The Spanish Moon..
