Pretty cool, but why would anyone film that? I love that they did, I love these little snapshots of everyday life, rather than being told about it (which leaves out the mundane, but interesting details).

Did you listen to that car crank? A warm day, and it still has to turn over a few times to start. Today with the engine controls and fuel injection, if the battery can turn over the engine at all, it just starts right up, you barely hear it 'crank'.

Little details like that are fascinating to me.

I remember shopping at Lovemans, Pizitz, Montgomery Ward, Woolworths, and the 5 and 10 cent store.

This is accurate. The average weight (or BMI, can’t remember) of Mississippians in the early 80s was lower than Coloradans’ today.

Please don't, as these are mostly wrong or they are figments of your broken memory/twisted perception.

I'm 30 so I obviously didn't daily drive cars of that era however I've a couple of late 60's, early 70's cars.

They're fun to look at and drive on nice days but car tech has definitely improved for the better.

I'm a '77 model and remember AM radio, Star Wars, VW Beetles and stuffing my face in birthday cake. That's about it.

The food also wasn't loaded with addictive poison, then, either.

Just remember, the tobacco companies after their exposure and lawsuits in the 90s revealed all their terrible business practices then reinvested and applied the exact same tactics to the food industry.

It's also likely no coincidence that the obesity rate skyrocketed after that.

Loved Eastwood Mall around 1979. Had an old 69 Camaro. Flirt with the girls on a Saturday night and just cruise around it. Scratch up some races and jump on I59. Those were the good old days.

You’re a whiny little bitch, aren’t ya? Bet you never rebuilt an engine, replace a clutch, pack wheel bearings, replace brakes. Pull a motor with a come-along from a tree limb. I still have the brackets and chain in my basement after 40 years. Got a cherry picker but loaned it to a friend…which you probably have none.

Oh look, another argguaghhh 70s and 80s 90s was best ever I get it. You were a kid then. You had no responsibilities. Today you do have responsibilities. This has been said forever.

Silly post, but some pretty harsh responses as well.

Let's start this way. “Best ever” is a state of mind, not a state of achievement. Members of that 1977 family may well look back on those days as the "best ever," while you view these days as "terrible." But the irony is you’d not remotely consider swapping your current situation with their “best ever” situation.

For example, look at their house. It’s about a 1400sqft ranch with window unit a/c’s. Inside you’d find cheap construction, linoleum floors, naugahyde furniture, formica countertops, and one or maybe two very low res TVs (which only picked up 3 or 4 stations total). In physical terms there'd be little or nothing in that 1977 milieu approaching your current standards or expectations.

Oh, and their 30-yr mortgage rate? In 1977, it was around 8.5%-9%. The sub-4% rates we’ve seen for the past decade are historically unheard of.

As an aside, when is the last time you drove in a car with roll-up windows like the one in the video? Meanwhile, interest rates on that clunker ran north of 10%.

The point is, it is likely that “best ever” family lived in shite conditions compared with yourself. Ironically, they were probably just fine with their situation, while you seem to fret about yours. Carpe diem, brother. Because tomorrow, you may find that these were the “good ole days,” and you weren’t in the mental space to enjoy them.

Finally, this “my generation has it rough, your generation is stupid” silliness predates Hammurabi and his Code. It’s been going on forever. Most generations think they’ve done great and wonderful things, and the successive generation is soft. Most upcoming generations throughout history have felt like the “old people” don’t get it, whatever “it” is. Now is no different. It is what it is.

At any point on the OT, you can find 10 threads on pg 1 about how 80s and 90s was best.
