An unusually strong solar storm headed toward Earth could produce northern lights in the U.S. and potentially disrupt communications this weekend.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare geomagnetic storm watch — the first in nearly 20 years. The watch starts Friday and lasts all weekend.

quote:

NOAA said the sun produced strong solar flares beginning Wednesday, resulting in five outbursts of plasma capable of disrupting satellites in orbit and power grids here on Earth. Each eruption — known as a coronal mass ejection — can contain billions of tons of solar plasma.

NOAA is calling this an unusual event, pointing out that the flares seem to be associated with a sunspot that’s 16 times the diameter of Earth. An extreme geomagnetic storm in 2003 took out power in Sweden and damaged power transformers in South Africa.
The latest storm could produce northern lights as far south in the U.S. as Alabama and Northern California, according to NOAA.

I had a coronal mass ejection earlier and it felt fantastic.

I have not. Apparently the best shot is tonight. I am going to my folks tomorrow at Lake Martin. I might go up to the fire tower atop Smith Mountain on Saturday night to see if I can see them.

I saw them once from the window of my plane over Anchorage.

As a child in central Virginia, we had one night when the clouds were dull red all night long.
I have also seen the northern lights in Iceland where they were in the open sky and green wavy-sort of things.

Never seen them myself before, and I can't recall ever hearing of them being recorded as far south as Alabama either.

I know they have gotten as far south as Virginia. Not sure when the last time was, but there are reports of them in December 1862. There was an aurora visible the night after the Battle of Fredericksburg. Soldiers from the lower latitudes believed it was a sign from God either supporting their cause or condemning them all for the number of deaths inflicted during the battle.

Will it open up the 10m band propagation?

this is actually a big deal. Just had a 6th one this morning, it's possible they'll upgrade this to being the most powerful solar storm since we've been using instruments (~100 years).

Imagine a "Carrington Event" type situation today. That's just what we need to pile on with the rest of this clown world.

Isn't that band kind of static laden this time of year?
