Noticed my vision had gotten worse recently so I had an eye exam. The OD said no sign of glaucoma or retinal disease, but I have cataracts, probably genetic, not age related. Glasses won't improve my vision and I need surgery, wants to refer me to an eye surgeon. Does this sound plausible? Should I get a second opinion?

Very plausible. Those are classic AIDS symptoms.

Cataracts are pretty common. My Dad has them but they haven't progressed enough to where he needs surgery at this point.

I just figured we would try glasses first, but he was pretty adamant.

Laser procedure is fast and you will see 20/20.

My dad had it done in his late 70's, he said it wasn't bad. I took him to the procedure and it didn't take that long. He stopped needing his glasses after it.

Do you have a lot of trouble driving at night? Have a yellow tint to your vision? Sensitivity to light? See halos around lights?

The thing about cataracts is they progress slowly so you may not have even realized it was disrupting your vision to a larger degree.

I’m an OD

How old are you?
Think about it, if an OD is telling you that a cataract evaluation is necessary and not selling you glasses (where they make money), pretty sure it’s there.
What was the OD able to get you to see? 20/?

So you want to spend money on glasses that aren't gonna work, then have to spend money on cataract surgery a month later?

Late fifties

He went through the progression and nothing improved my vision well enough to read the letters clearly. I could make out some of them but they weren't clear.

Sounds like the right referral.
You have to go through a consultation first, so it’s not like you’re getting surgery right away.
Your referral to the surgeon/ophthalmologist is the second opinion.

My Mom had cataract surgery last year. Aside from reading glasses, which she wore before the cataracts, she says her vision is back to 20/20. OP should get the surgery.

I have the same and am scheduled for my first eye in two weeks. From what I understand, totally worth it to get the surgery early if you qualify.

If we all live long enough we’ll all need cataract surgery, some sooner than others…several different factors can speed them up…..and you can even be born with them.

But like the other OD said……. If an OD referred you instead of selling you glasses, you probably need surgery.

They may have medications or treatments to stop the progression. I know someone who gets shots in their eyes every few months to stop them from getting worse.
