Georgia woman fell to death at Ohio State in likely suicide as daughter graduated, coroner says

quote:

Authorities in Ohio on Tuesday identified the person killed in a fall during a graduation ceremony at Ohio State University as a 53-year-old Georgia woman.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Franklin County Coroner’s Office. She fell from the stands of the school’s football stadium near the Bell Tower around midday on Sunday.

quote:

According to the commencement program, her daughter was one of the graduates. Columbus police said the fall was not accidental, local TV station WJW reported. However, an official cause of death — still to be released by the coroner’s office — will determine whether it was a suicide. The incident wasn’t mentioned during the three-hour event, angering some students and staff members.

Larissa Brady, 53, of Woodstock, Georgia, north of Marietta, was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m. Sunday at the scene outside Ohio Stadium by Columbus firefighters, according to the coroner's office. Brady was identified by her fingerprints, the coroner's office said.

Brady then went into the stadium with her husband and 12-year-old son to sit and watch the ceremony, according to an investigative report from the coroner's office.

Once seated, Brady then told her family she wanted to move higher into the stadium and her family told investigators they lost sight of her. After making her way to the last row of benches, witnesses saw Brady climb over the stadium's concrete wall, according to the coroner's office. Brady had been sitting in section C30 near the bell tower.

According to the coroner's office, Brady had suffered from mental health issues and had attempted suicide at least twice before, most recently earlier this year. Her husband told investigators that she had not been compliant with her medications.

I feel sorry for her family. Mental health issues are crazy to figure out. I'll never side with those who commit suicide but it's crazy to be in attendance of something exciting and your first thought is to kill yourself.

I feel sorry for her mental health issues, but goddamn putting all those people through the mental anguish of watching someone die is so goddamn messed up.

Not only was she suicidal, she was also likely a huge narcissist.

She just had to find a way to overshadow her daughter’s big day.

I know people like to argue about the suicide being selfish thing but doing this on your daughters college grad day is next level selfish.

Yeah that was my thought too. If something like that happened to me I wouldn't show up to the funeral.

Self-harm/suicide is a mental illness that is just such a massive and devastating blow to families - but this has got to be one of the most depraved and just overall selfish and hurtful things that a parent could ever do to a child/husband.

It's easy to say since she is not my mom (thank you mom), but I'd have her cremated and not bother to pick up the ashes.

What did people think should have been said that might have made it better?

"We are sorry someone's mom chose this event as an opportunity to off herself, but we will now proceed as scheduled"?

Sitting through an hours long graduation in the hot sun could make anyone want to end it.

At least a phone or a book can make it more tolerable.

And they just let her go off by herself. I think they were just waiting for the inevitable.

just another example of this generation being entirely ate up with main character syndrome. What the "angry students" likely wanted is for the ceremony to be completely stopped so that they could post on social media about how they are so upset and it was like totally crazy and things were so scary so please pray for me at this time while we all grieve through this as a community

You are blaming the family? How would anyone think someone would kill themselves during their daughter's graduation? Do you know how terrible ordeal it is to try to watch an adult suicidal family members for years?

If someone is refusing their meds and regularly suicidal, there is only so much that can be done by friends/family members. People who are suicidal can't always be "fixed". If she had attempted before multiple times, she's likely had inpatient care (highest level of care) and again, there's only so much that you can do if they're not taking the medication as prescribed.
