100% agree. The biggest military mistake of the 20th century was allowing the USSR to stay in existence.

1) Without Lend Lease Moscow falls in 1941 and the rest of the USSR in 1942. Yes they put armed men, tanks and artillery into the meat grinder without regard to life or limb. Lend Lease is the only reason they had guns, bullets, artillery, planes, and tanks

2) Germany’s refusal to develop a long range bomber despite their desire for “living space” in the East cost them the war with Russia.

3) Germany’s failure to develop a simple fighter that had a better turning radius than the British fighters cost them the Battle of Britain and air superiority over the continent. This made D Day possible.

4) Germany’s over reliance upon U Boats to control and limit both the flow of goods from the US to the continent and defend the coast may have been their greatest mistake. Regardless of Lend Lease, If Germany could have sustained control of both the commercial shipping lanes as well as the sea coasts / ports, England starves and Russia runs out of bullets, guns, artillery, tanks, etc.

One of the most interesting topics Indy dives into during the WW2 week by week series is the war machine data.

US deserves some credit for lend/lease and D-day etc. which is why i gave them 10%.

90% credit for the USSR is deserved because of the savagery and barbarism required to beat back the fanatical, meth head germans. they were on the frontline in brutal weather in some of the worst circumstances imaginable.

And they don't do any of that without American material and financial aide. It also can't be understated how much of our strategic bombing campaign had on the ability of Germany to keep up the pace of production required to turn out the machines to defend themselves against the onslaught of the Red Army. The Russians did the lion's share of fighting against the Germans in World War II. That is beyond dispute. However, all of that fanatical fighting is all for naught if they don't have industrial materials and products, such as aviation gasoline, metals and machine tools for the manufacture of munitions, cloth and leather to make uniforms and shoes in the factories of Soviet Russia. By June 1944 we had sent 11,000 planes, 6,000 tanks and tank destroyers, and 300,000 trucks to aid Russia in its fight against the Germans.

but they probably weren't in any condition to do anything about the uprising either.

But Stalin also nixed British plans to air lift the Warsaw Jews supplies. The man was pure evil.
If Hitler was 1, Stalin was 1A.

If not for Lend Lease, the Red Army would have been a starving mob of barefoot men dressed in rags trudging around on foot while mountains of tanks, artillery pieces, and aircraft sat idle outside of factories on the Urals due to no means to transport them to the front.

Great find with this YouTube video. I'm going to listen to that entire thing tomorrow.

I could not imagine being alive back then and being glued to the radii listening to this news.

Incredible.

Also, without Lend/Lease the Commies are beaten by the Nazis. USA saved their butts with that. Yeah, they did a bulk if fighting and dying against the Nazis, but they couldn't have done it without us Also, don't underestimate the fighting we did in N Africa and Italy and the buildup for France. That ties up soldiers that could have been fighting in the East.

Also, you want to talk about savage fighting in the Eastern front, try the Pacific. No other country could have done what the USA did, fighting the Japs in the Pacific while simultaneously supplying the war machine in Europe and building up our own forces in Britain to invade France. Nobody.

Stalin was ruthless, I don’t think he would have permitted any allied encroachment into the Soviet sphere, especially anything that looked like intelligence work.

Peter Kemp (the legendary SOE officer) was in Poland at the end of the war. He was inserted a few weeks before the end if I remember correctly. He was captured by the Soviets, and they were pretty nasty to him. He was lucky not to be killed.

Outstanding victory for the soviets. Pretty pathetic that the US tries to act like they defeated the nazis…it was the ussr that put in 90% of the work

I hope this is sarcasm. If not, this may be the most ignorant statement I’ve ever read. You really need to educate yourself.

I agree. Stopping at the Elbe and letting them have Berlin was a huge mistake. Our leaders were so politically naive about the Soviets intentions.
