Maybe it's something else.

Georgia is getting swallowed up by metro Atlanta from a political standpoint the same way states like Virginia or North Carolina have been. It's certainly trending purple.

Thread is sleeping on Virginia. That said I would pick Alabama as most southern

The spread of NOVA and the carpetbaggers severely impacted VA’s historic Southern status. But certainly a lot still there.

That's similar to North Carolina. Charlotte and Raleigh make it a little less Southern but get out of the major metros and it's full of baws.

Greenville, SC and Fayetteville (Northwest Arkansas) are some of the most underrated and beautiful areas in the southern US.

I like both areas a lot. NWA definitely seems sort of Midwestern to me. I think most of Arkansas is certainly Southern though.

The southern mountain culture is part of the south. It's not a monolithic culture. Eastern TN, Eastern KY, Western NC, and Western Virginia all have their own mountain south culture.

It's just as close to Ohio hick culture as it is redneck, however.

For better and for worse, I think it’s pretty clearly Alabama. And I both love and hate it for that very reason.

Whichever has the highest demographics of blacks ironically. So MS or LA.

Sadly GA has to be 4 in that group because it’s a blue state.

1. SC
2. Alabama
3 Mississippi
4. GA

It's close to Ohio hick culture because SW Ohio is so close to KY. Lol, the culture doesn't stop at state borders. There's bleed over.

The South is a lot of different places

The map you showed is an excellent illustration as to why there is such a difference of opinion ITT. AL and MS are Deep South and GA and SC are Old South. The cultures are fairly different and answering the OP depends on which one you think is "most Southern". It becomes even more complex because the culture of SC for example is quite different above and below the fall line.

Right, there are plenty of regional variations on the theme. Memphis is not Mobile, Charleston is not Charlotte, etc, which may require different metrics.

I think part of it is what area still has it—ie, hasn’t gotten the growth, for better or worse, of the Sunbelt blow up.

If lack of growth is a metric - Louisiana

Mississippi , Alabama and South Carolina

Atlanta and Charlotte have completely taken Georgia and North Carolina out of the picture
